tranny slipping at WOT shifting into 3rd
tranny slipping at WOT shifting into 3rd
tonight, i was getting on the freeway, and after having a frustrating night, decided to have a nice little WOT. well almost WOT ride to 3rd gear, wanted to see if i could chirp shifting into 3rd (iv done it before).. well the only noise i heard when the tranny finally shifted was what sounded like the tranny slipping and the engine rouring past redline.. i imediatly let off the gas and it shifted into OD, and i got off the freeway. and everything was fine. shifted into 3rd just fine everyother time.. however, this has happend a few times before, maybe twice, but i had always though i let off the gas right when it shifted or something. but this time i stayed on the gas.. what could the problem be? i don't ordinarliy have problems with the tranny. could it be that it got too hot and that caused it to slip.. Or could it be that im just going crazy and that it didn't realy slip i just thought it did since i was going 80+ MPH? cause it more felt like i was spinning out then the tranny slipping, cause my tach doesn't work, but i could feel vibration when it was happening.. not sure if it was the engine or the tranny.. i have a tranny cooler installed by the way.. thanks guys

uh-oh, reminds me of my 83 bird, it started with just slips from 2-3 then vibrations at shift then everything slipping, you could be losing it, if the fluid is black its even more likely. Anyway probably change the fluid/filter and keep a very close eye on it, good luck

I'm having a very similiar problem with my NEW tranny. I don't know about yours but mine will bang into 3rd pretty hard which is what has me a little confused cause I always thought that a tranny that would allow the motor the rev up as fast as mine does wouldn't grab the next gear very hard if it even did at all without getting out of the gas. I even chirped the tires slightly the other night at about 70 mph after it reved up after going to WOT. Keep my posted if you find out what is going on.
Mine is doing the same. I was told that it could either be a bad sprag or worn out clutch pack. Rather then buying a GM tranny or having it re-built locally I opted for a Pro-Built tranny. It should be here anyday...

I had problems with my tranny shifting down from 4 to 3 at throttle...because of the weak stock sprag, had to have a heavy duty 3/4 sprag installed...now it shifts great.

The TV valve is sticking. Common problem. If you don't fix it
eventually the 3-4 clutches will burn out. If not already.
Transgo has a specific fix for the sticking TV valve.
Might be time for a kit.

My tranny was just rebuilt 9 months ago, and it has a 12 month warranty. The 2nd to drive shift is nice and firm at part throttle, but after about half throttle it slips as it goes into drive. The day I went to take it back for warranty work, it suddenly started shifting fine. Possibly a coincidence, but that same day I also took the car on a 200 mile highway drive. It shifted perfect for about three or four days, so naturally the trans shop said they couldn't find a problem. The fluid looks brand new. Now it started slipping again, but I'd guess that 1 out of every 5 shifts doesn't slip now. What do you guys think? I'm pretty good at playing mechanic, so is there anything I could do? I hate to bring the car back to the shop and be without it for three days, just so they can say there is nothing wrong with it.

Sounds like a pressure regulating valve is sticking.
Could be a problem in the pump too.
