Slave cylinder for T-56 just exploded. Need some help
Even with the cylinder not attached to the tran, it was extremely difficult to compress. I got pisted and went to hard and boom, instant pool of brake fuid.
Can I re-assemble this one? I called AutoZone and they do not carry one yet.
What year did they change the cylinder. Mine is out of a 97 Z.
What cause the cylinder to bind??? I read of this happening elsewhere also?
Thanks,
Mike

ummm you wrecked it. if it does not go down smothly stop because something is messed up. You should NEVER EVER push it down unles it is bolted to the tranny and the rod is compressed by the clutch fork.
Pep boys carries the slave cylinder for about $50. They're Raybestos, so I recommend using theirs. I blew mine up a few years ago too, and I didn't even press the clutch when it was disconnected from the tranny. The Raybestos one seems to be tougher. Just make sure you bleed it thoroughly.
I just had to do mine too. Was riding home and then, no clutch. I replaced the slave cylinder and the problem came back within a few days. Turns out the line was the problem. It would bleed fluid out and suck air in. I replaced the whole setup with one from GM and it has never worked so well.

I ended up just getting a complete unit from GM for 105.00
My guess is that the check valve in the master cylinder got stuck. I saw that I was also leaking a bit around the master rod seal. Frick it. I do not want any more clutch problems.
Feels good now. Next problem is that I had to get a different starter since a old 700R4 one won't work. Luckily the guy I got my trans from felt some pitty about the clutch and gave me an LT1 starter for free. Man, is that thing small. Smaller than my high torque starter from Summit Racing.
Then I found out that the torque arm mount is completely different for 700's, T56's and 4LE60's. The search continues.

83's had 700R4's....... I would like to see how a grinder made that work. I tried one off a 4th gen auto, and my auto, but there was no way to make the three bolts line up. The t-56 one is quite a bit smaller than those.
I finally got my ride on the road Friday @ 4:20 am. I didn't have the clutch retainer clip on the pedal, so it popped out on me a few times that night, but it was worth it just to go through the gears once or twice. By the next day I was able to fix it on the fly.
My car sounds totally different. The gearbox has a natural wine, sounds great. It had me freaked out at first thinking it was the TO bearing failing (sleep deprivation can do that to ya)
Thanks for all the info again.
Kelly, hope you got KB. I did on my inaugural run.

The tranny is supposed to have a whine to it? I know mine does, but I was convinced that I either didn't put enough grease on the throwout bearing or I had just put in a bad TO bearing. The whine is kinda low until I press the clutch, then its louder. Does anyone else have a whine as well?

forget whine if you guys ever hear a sound like a ron knocking but goes away when you push in the clutch that is the T-56 as well but it is nowmal I have talked to ALOT of 4th gen guys who said that theirs does it too
Also I have a poly tranny mount and I modified the factory metal brakcet.
