When floored, its seems like I lose 3rd gear??...

This is on my 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale Brougham 3800.
I'll put it in D. Drive around normally from a stop I have 1, 2, 3. I'll punch the gas a little (close to flooring but not quite) from a stop I have 1, 2, 3. When driving around in 3rd. And I floor it, it'll downshift into 2nd, and I still have 3rd.

BUT.. when I FLOOR it, I'll have 1, 2, nothin...??
I'll get it up to around 50mph, and I can hear the engine revving really high, and kinda sputtering, it won't seem to upshift. Feels almost like its in Neutral, but I think it feels like that cause I'm so high in rpm, it just seems like that. It will only upshift after I totally release the throttle, and coast for a second, I'll feel it up shift then I can floor it again.

Whats up with my tranny?? Does the Olds' tranny have some thing where it won't upshift to 3rd floored?? Whats the deal? It normally goes into 3rd, but not when flooring?

Thanks all! Non Thirdgen, believe me I know. But transmission related non the less. What kinda tranny I have anyway, doubt its a 700R4 or nothin?

Might be time for a rebuild... I'm losing 3rd all the time- whether I floor it or not. Even if I take off gently from a light, if I don't lift my foot up to let the trans do a 2-3 shift, I'll hear "Vrooom!" as the engine spins up but the car slows down; I let off the gas, and hear/feel "BANG!"

That is a 440-T4/4T60. Most likely the 2nds are pretty well on the way out though it could also be the 3rds. Time for an O/H. Much tougher than a 700 though.

Thanks for the reply Transfixleo, you certainly know your trannies.
However, I'm sure as hell not gonna overhaul it. This is just a daily driver. How long do you think the tranny will last, as long as I go easy on her?? Think being how it might be on its way out, should I leave it in OD or D? Thanks again.

If it only shows up in 3rd but 4th seems OK use O/D. Otherwise keep a cell phone handy!

Cell phone? That doesn't sound good. How long you think it will last? Couple months? 5,000 miles?? Give me a good round number of where I could expect problems. I haven't tried OD, while drivin round streets, just on the highway. I mean its only when I floor it I lose 3rd, then I release throttle, shifts into 3rd, and I'm good. I'll just try not floor it anymore, that should give it some life. How bout the TV cable?? The fluid??
..I would figure it better to leave in D because line pressure would be better right??

If the 4T60 is anything like the 4L60 (700r4), line pressure is only increased in manual 2nd or manual 1st. Line pressure stays the same in manual D as it does for manual OD. So driving around in "D" would only keep you out of OD, it wouldn't increase the line pressure.
