help identify my tranny

I posted last week and thought I had a 200c, but upon further investigation it has what looks to be B&Ms changeover kit on the tailshaft. a vaccuum modulator on the right rear, and whomever did the swap welded the crossmember to the frame because it needed to be moved and wouldnt line up anymore. I need some solid tips on I.D ing this thing.

Sounds like a Turbo 350. Its a common swap into thirdgens because so many underestimate the potential of the 700R-4. Some people are even willing to loose the overdrive based merly on myths and misconceptions, some people just havn't come across one built correctly.

did you use 700R-4 and built correctly in the same sentence?! I have gone through 3 of those junk trannies. I finally put in a TH350! It is superb!

Thats funny, because everybody always talks about how "easy" and "tough" the Turbo350 is, yet my cousin went through 3 in two years. I won't touch it. I don't like those trannies. I'm rather partial to the 700R4/4L60 (hence the screen name) and I think (and so do those who I built them for) that I do a rather good job. Sounds to me like you just wasted your money on a bunch of junk trannies from sorry builders.

yes, that is entirely possible. 2 were just pulled and put in, one I had rebuilt by a tranny shop. I suppose I could spend the money and buy a performance one, I am currently considering it...past experiences have me a litlle leary though! I have read many posts about how a good 700R4 is a great tranny...I just have yet to see one. I have been trying to locate a good builder. You mention that you build them. Do you have a company or is it just a hobby? Any recommendations?

I belive that the subject of this thread is help identifying my tranny not TH350 vs. 700R4 but thanks for your single-minded input, 4L60bliss.

I would not see why they would need to weld the x-member to the frame. I used a 200c x-member or similar and used the pre-threaded holes in the frame. The only differance between the 700r4 and TH350 x-member is the hole for the mount. The 700 is offset to the drivers side and the TH350 is centered.

TH350/400 have 13 pan bolts, 700's have 16 I believe. You might try to look at that too...

Hope this helps,
Matt

Either your deeply offended because you've been led to beleive that the Turbo350 is the "ultimate" tranny or your just looking to stir the pot. At any rate, opinions are like a$$holes: everybody has one, and NOBODY wants to hear it, so you just have to learn to take sombodies opinion with a grain of salt. A tranny is only as good as the person who built it. I didn't mean to step on any of you "TH350" guy's toes.

BTW, I did start out trying to help him identify the tranny, so go find some sand to pound.

I know a lot of people who run Th-350's that did not choose them becouse they have never seen a 700 that could take any abuse or becouse they have never seen one built correctly, which I assume means built by you. There are a lot of reasons why someone would decide to swap in a TH350 and many of the people who have done it are very happy that they did. However, none of this helps when you are trying to figure out what kind of tranny is in your car.

The only opinion I shared was that your post was typical of someone who had never had a TH350 and think that 700's are the only way to go. Other than that it seems I have kept my opinions of the 700R4 or any other transmission to myself.

Have a nice day,
Matt

Have I had one? NO. Have I rebuilt some? YES. Do I know people that have had them and had problems? YES. And its only fair that I include: Do I know people that have the TH350 and have NOT had problems? YES. Big deal. Like I said, a tranny is only as good as it builder.

Do I think the 700 is the way to go? Well, considering that these cars came equipped with them, so no modifications are needed to install, and you do have the benefit of the .070 overdrive, I'd say it is, but once again, were back to the opinion thing.

But like you said, NONE of this matters in regards to the original topic, so since I don't know the exact answer to his question, I'm done talking.

OK, Im still looking for some help on this one. Did the 200c have a vacuum modulator? Did it have cast in torque arm mounts? Also what other trannies can I get a flywheel cover off of, it is the last thing I need to pass inspection.

I'm not sure if the 200 had a vacuum modulator or not. Flywheel/TC covers can be found for about any tranny in Jegs or Summit.

Also I think that the 200c's were iron, not aluminum like TH 350's or 400's. I think you may be able to look up casting numbers on the internet too, at a website similar to www.mortec.com except I think they only have engine casting numbers.
