Speedo gear change Sleeve question for those that have done it.

I am changing the gears in my 4l60 (90' 700r4).

I am putting in a 16 tooth (8640517)
and a 43 Tooth (25513050)

The question I have about is the sleeve differences that is in the FAQ.

I originally had a outer gear that was less than 40 tooth. From my understanding that it has a different sleeve than the gears 40 and above. the part #(25007339) is suppose to be for 40 and above, however, my local GM parts guy has no record of it and at gmpartsdirect it does not show it as a valid #. What is up with that?

Those of you who have the VSS on the trany and have done a speedo gear change, could you let me know what you did and If you did a sleeve change, the part #.

Thanks

I cant help much with this one since its a VSS deal, I had alot of problems when I was looking for the offset housing for a cable driven setup. The dealers dident help at all they couldent find any parts I needed, not the offset housing or 15 tooth grey drive gear hey even said if we dont list them we dont make them I eventually found an old 3rdgen tech artical that wasent related to this site anymore but at one time wasm all the part numbers were good and I had the parts the next day. I think you part numbers may be wrong but they do make them. www.700r4.com/ has all the parts you need if you have a card.

My part # are for electric driven speedo not cable ones.

The 700r4.com site looks like the only sleeves they have is for the cable driven speedos.

I was thinking, I might still have an offset VSS housing at the shop. If I can find it I'll pull the numbers for you.

Ok Here is what I have...

Is this what everyone would describe as a gear for an electric speedo...

Those that have a similar setup did you have to do anything special it go to a higher tooth count like a 40? Or did you just change the gear? I have changed my mind on the inside gear most that are putting in 3.42 are using

15 teeth part???? (8642620)

40 tooth ???? (25513047)

are these the correct #s for this style gear?

I would like to know the same thing. Do you have to change the sleeve in an electric speedo car when going from 2.73 to 3.42? I will be using a 15/39 tooth combo.

From what I have read if you stay below 40 you can use the vss that you are using for the 2.73. I went with a 40 tooth gear and I had to get a new sleeve(sender) from the dealer.

how much was the new sender and do you happen to have the part # on hand? I'm pretty sure that with my 255/50/16's with a 26.1 inch diameter the 15/39 would be the correct speedo combination to have, right? So hopefully I won't have to worry about changing my vss. Thanks for the info.

Yes 15/39 is correct for 255/50/16. I have 245/50/16 and 15/40 is correct for me.

You should not need a new vss.

If you still need the # let me know, I am at work and do not have it on hand.

Tom

I was just about to post a q about this topic, but i'll just revive this one.
Basicly, there is no sleeve to change on a VSS setup? Is there a VSS for 35-39 tooth and one for 40-45 tooth?

When I got it done I changed from the stock 17/37 combo to the 3.42 combo, 15/41 gray/yellow and used the same VSS the only difference is the placement of the drive gear on the trans output shaft. When you look at it there will be a clip under part of the gear and it will go into a hole in the shaft. There are two holes the one closer to the front of the car is for the stock (39-lower) gears and the one more towards the rear is for the 40-higher drive gears. PM me if this is confusing, I have done it all cable and VSS on both T-5 and 700R4.

gear tooth question

I'm about to switch from a 2.77 rear end to a 3.45 rear. What tooth combo do I need to pull this swap off? I haven't had any luck with the GM dealers in my area. Thanks
