700R4 won't shift out of 1st gear

My 700R4 in my 87 T/A won't shift out of first gear. I searched and read about the TV cable adjustments. Checked that and same thing. Could the cable be loose at the transmission end? Also, Anyone have more information on the governor gear and pix or describe its location. Thanks!

It is probably your second gear clutch pack Or your TV hanging up. Try stomping on the gas pedal really fast while the car is off about 20 times really fast and take it for a drive. If that doesn't work it may be internal.

Most likely culprit of a no-shift into second in an otherwise functioning tranny is governor gear. Fried clutches usually don't randomly hit you without warning, and incoreect TV adjustment will just give you late shifts, same with a stuck TV.

Do a search on how to swap governors. It would take me longer to type than it is to do the job.

Hmm... My clutch pack went out all of the sudden about 2 weeks after I bought my car. Then a few months ago my throttle valve was hanging up because I guess my torque converter was shot and was sending metal through the trans and into the T.V. It temporarily fixed itself when I hit the gas a few times it would free up for a few minutes then stick again.

I agree. You could try tapping on the governor housing and surrounding area LIGHTLY with a hammer for a quick fix.

Usually I tell people that a stuck throttle valve can cause a no shift out of first. This isn't entirely true, the car will eventually shift into second, but most people won't rev it up high enough to let it shift. So I act on the "perceived" no shift. If you have messed with the cable and wound it out and it still won't shift, then like others have suggested, a governer issue. Either it be a busted gear or a stuck governer valve. There is a round cover on the left side (drivers side) of the tranny towards the rear, in front of the speed sensor/speedo drive. Pry that cover off (its pressed in place) and slide the governer out. Check to see if the green gear is still in tact.

It was the governor gear. It was completely stripped. I love replacing a 12.00 part and getting my tranny back. Thanks for the help.

ive had a 700 do that before, occasionally it would go to 2nd, i knew the tranny was bad from the get go though and when we pulled the pan to drain and remove the tranny, there was a hoard of metal chips, that thing was shot beyond belief. aahh, good old 700r4...sounds like your in good shape though
