Do I need a TV cable from a Carbed car?

I've searched the boards and it sounds like the carbed cars had different T.V. cables than the TPI cars had. My IROC was originally a 305 TPI but I put in a 350 with a carb. We can't get it to shift below 4000 in any gear. I just have the stock T.V. cable. Do I need a cable from a carbed car? Is there a difference? I'm ready to try another tranny unless this is my problem. TIA

Yes. Yes. Quit driving the car like that, you'll burn up the transmission. I think I have a cable. Email me if you want it.

TV cable

Third Gen's used a Q-jet until '86. The one I bought for an '86 Monte is possibly the same TV cable-GM # 25507546. It was
$30-$35 from my local GM dealer. It was about half that from www.gmpartsdirect.com, but shipping would probably eat up the difference.

What is the difference between the two cables? The only thing I see is the length. Is that all and does it make that big of a difference? The D button on my new cable for a carbed car wouldn't push in. I don't have to spray WD-40 on it or anything do I?

Where the cable housing snaps into the bracket and where the cable snaps onto the throttle lever are most likely different lengths between the two, and yes this makes a big difference. A correct cable is a cheap investment to make sure your trans has correct line pressure for a given throttle opening, and that your trans does not burn up clutches and bands.

The D-button is sometimes tight. On my 86 (uh, before it became 5spd,) I had to use a screwdriver to press the button down; thumb power was not enough. At least it won't accidentally adjust itself.

Well, I got a new cable and it was easier to press the button. We got it put on along with a new bracket from Hughes Performance and we still couldn't get it to shift right so we pulled the tranny out and are going to put in another 700R4 to see what happens. We put a shift kit in the original one and might have messed something up. This is my project car which I've never driven before so I don't know how it was before.
