Vigilante 2800 -vs- Loosened Stock Converter HP and ET test

Wow this seems like one of the best mods you can do, I never thought a TC could increase power to the rear wheels like that.

I thought some would enjoy the info

Holy crap....

Wait just a second.

Yes, I am absolutely astounded by those results.

Ok....let me get off the computer so I can order a Vigilante for my 91's RS right now....j/k

That's really impressive. I want a 2500 stall for my 355 though, a little more steet friendly. I'll probably have one custom built, if not, maybe a 10 incher.

You don't know what you are talking about or you are unfamiliar with Precision Industries. The 2800 is 100% street friendly. I ran that for awhile and now I am running a 3600 and is also 100% street friendly. Remember - the PI converters are A LOT tighter at part throttle than the converters of the past.

I have a Stock ( never had the valve covers off. ) L98 with headers only. The car with a B&M Holeshot 2400 has gone 13.7 with a 1.84 60ft. This week I had a Yank SS3600 installed and it's very streetable and will get to the track next weekend. If you have the money get a Vig or a little more money get a SS Yank.

Ok there guy, since you want to be cool and all.....

A 2800 rpm converter mated to a 425 horse 355ci motor with 3.23 rear gears will be street friendly? I am in Hawaii where the speed limit is 55 mph, tops. That meawns my cruise rpm is usually well below 2000 rpm.

I want good gas mileage and be able to actually drive tha car. Not to mention I do not want to pay 600-800 bucks for a freakin' TC.

425 horse 355? Bla. I'm pushing close to 500 naturally aspirated. If you don't want to spend 600-800 bucks ... well, what can I say ... there's your problem. Don't expect much from a cheapo torque converter. I can easily cruise at 1900rpms with my 3600 PI converter. Do a search on the various boards. The PI, Yank, and similar high quality converters give you what you pay for.

Your looking for mileage and you converted from fuel injection to a Demon carb

Next time your in redlands P.M. me. I go to fontana for the drags and you can see a car with a good converter and learn something.

People seem to forget that when a converter locks up, then they are all just about the same. The only reason I say "about" is because smaller diameter converters weigh considerably less, but zero RPM of slippage when locked means ZERO RPM, regardless of what converter it is. Many 700's will lock up between 35-40 MPH, so gas mileage isn't effected by much. I was running an ACT 9.5" 2800 stall with my 355, ZZ4 cammed, ported TFS G1 headed Trans Am and I sent it back to have a little more stall put in. Its VERY streetable.

All I can say is you get what you pay for. I'll gladly pay 600-800 bones for another "quality" converter when that time comes again. I guess you just have to own one to understand.

Let me know when you find someone that has an Lo3 beefed up to my #'s with TBI. It's not going to happen without power adding. I HATE ECM's. i don't care what anyone says, they are just not as reliable as good ol' basic carb and HEI setups. Sensors will always go bad, it's just the nature of having all those circuits, when 1 thing goes bad, it effects everything else, in an HEI setup, you only have a possibility of a few problems.

And BTW, my mileage is actually pretty good with that carb. I have an edel on my 84' and get about 21-24 mpg on the freeway with 3.73's. Carbs can get very near the mpg of EFI when tuned well.
