Missing a spring in the servo?

I was replacing my servo tonight, with the one that comes in the Trans Go HD shift kit. I noticed my original servo is missing the spring that goes behind the plate. Not the cushion spring or the bigger spring inside the piston, but the very last spring. Is this spring necessary? Apparently the stock servo will work just fine without it, considering I never had any problems with my transmission.

Are you talking about the "orange" spring that goes in before the servo? If you are, get one from a local shop. It does help keep the band off.

I don't know if it's orange since I don't have it, but yes it's the one that goes in first before the servo. Is that something I could get seperately at a dealership?

This is the spring I'm talking about. I just ordered one from the dealership for $6.50.

You could pick up one from any local transmission shop for $.050.

Wish I had known that an hour ago. Oh well, too late now I guess. At least I can finally get the 1LE back on the road tomorrow.

I got the spring today. The guy at the counter was a little confused on which spring I needed, and also thought that my car should have came with the 4L60E. I explained to him that I had a 700R4 and was putting in a Corvette servo. Just to make sure, is p/n 8642273 the correct spring? Also, any tips on getting the snap ring back in place? I'm having trouble. It doesn't want to all fit with the extra spring in there. Maybe that's why the last guy left it out.

Thanks

With Transgo kit, discard snap ring, just like the directions that you have there say.

I left out the snap ring that goes in the 2nd piston. I'm having trouble with the one that holds the cover on.

You are supposed to be checking band clearance. When doing this "do not" install the seals. Only install seals on "final" assembly. If the clearance is not correct (too little), you will not be able to get the snap ring in. Do not put in the Trans-Go bronze spacer ring (in the majority of cases it is not needed), unless you have to much clearance. The band must move back and forth the way the "instructions" tell you, "do not" overlook this, it is critical.

If you do the band wiggle check and can turn the driveshaft in both directions, what would need to be done to discern if there is too much clearance?

It is a check to see if the 2-4 band will move (wiggle) forward and backward ~ 1/16". If it can not be moved then there is not enough clearance between it and the drum.
