MADE DECISION: T56 Swap

I just started a job that is going to be paying me 3x what my old one was... therefore, more Camaro mods!

Anyway, I have a feeling my 700R4 is dying and if it does, I'm DEFINATELY going to a T-56.

I've read info on the swaps and stuff however most of the posts seem to be from those experienced with RWD Manual transmissions or the like...

I have strong automotive skills but have honestly never really messed with a RWD manual tranny.

How hard is the total swap when going from 700R4 to T56?

I've seen some items that will need to be purchased... I can't find the complete list (maybe I'm using the wrong search parameters). Does anyone have it and is it the same when going from 700R4 to a T56?

HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY TOTAL FOR PARTS FOR THE SWAP?
WHERE DID YOU OBTAIN THE PARTS AND WERE YOU SATISFIED?

Also, does anyone have pics of the miscellaneous parts needed? This may sound like a strange request but you wouldn't believe the stuff I've found in J/Y's around here because I spotted them out of piles of "junk".

Thanks in advance guys...

I have some pictures of the parts i used at www.cardomain.com/id/350ws6 on the third page. I got the Tranny with everything I needed including the 4th gen console and a full 4th gen leather seats for 1500. I bought a used crossmember off of this board and a clutch for 200 for both. The difference is crazy, i thought about selling the car before but it is sooo much better to drive now. My advice is to do the swap as soon as you have the money. I started the install at 830PM and had it finished up by 6am. It is pretty straight foward, the hardest part is the pedals, make sure you take out your drivers seat to lay down and work under the dash. I learned alot on the boards and if you have any questions my email is mhaskell@juno.com

Places to get the conversion from are Junkyards, thirdgenresource, hawks, speedautomotive.com, billygrahamsfirebird.com and more that I can't think of.

Mods you will need to do include

-Mounting clutch/brake pedal
-Mounting Clutch master/slave cylinder
-Cut hole for the shifter

Here's some websites

http://www.skulte.com/T56.html
http://poorformance.net/tech/t56/t56.html
http://www.thirdgenresource.com/auto...ual_conversion

Search on this board and you will find much to help you

Here's a list of whats needed(roughly) and an idea of what the cost will be if installed yourself.

I haven't installed mine yet but I'm at like $1200 now and I shouldn't be over $1500 for *everything* by the time I'm done. Check out my site

www.cardomain.com/id/sixspeedinstall

Good luck bro!

Don't worry; whatever T-56 they had 2 years ago that you think was "reasonably priced", they've already sold it.

It's a JUNKYARD item. Basically, it's good at face value. Kind of like gasoline. It costs what it costs, within a very narrow band, no matter where you get it. Nobody in the junkyard business (except maybe your brother-in-law or something) is going to do you a favor and sell it to YOU, for less than they can sell it on the open market.

The supply of LT1 ones is beginning to dry up somewhat. I guess people have already wrecked most of them. Their price is starting to go up.

People will tell you all about what they *THINK* they're going to pay to make this swap, what it "should" cost them, and so forth; but everybody that's actually DONE it, including myself, will tell you that you'll have between $2200 and $2500 in it by the time you're able to drive the car again. That's transmission, bell housing, hydraulics, flywheel, clutch, crossmember, shifter, speedo conversion, torque arm, basically the whole nut. The transmission itself is about half of the total or a little less. The more you DON'T get in the package with your transmission, or the more you just want better stuff than stock or new stuff (clutch, hydraulics) or whatever, the more it'll cost.

To me, $1000-$1250 for the t-56 seems cheap. The cheapest I have been able to find them is for around $2000 regardless of age or mileage (including on e-bay). This one has a blown syncro and is already at $950 with 5 days left.

I paid $1000 for mine, from just yerbasic junkyard (no ebay stupid money bidding against me, or shipping charges); I got the bell housing and clutch fork with it, no hydraulics or clutch. I got the stock shifter but didn't use it (bought a Hurst), the stock torque arm stuff (went with a Spohn), had to get hold of the JTR speedo cable conversion, bought the $$$special flywheel for 2-pc rear main seal$$$, new clutch, new hydraulics from GM.

I expect they're a little higher than that now.

People always come up with that crap about "bad synchro". In reality, the synchros almost never go bad in a manual transmission. And the T-56 is a TOUGH piece of equipment, so if it's torn up IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER, it's suffered some abuse, and you don't want it.

Rather than ebay which is absolutely the wrong way to buy one of those, try www.car-part.com and search for a trans for 96 Z28. Keep checking back until you find one close to you.

I agree that e-bay is a bad place to buy a used transmission, but it is usually a pretty decent benchmark of lower priced places.

Thanks for the link. I will keep an eye out.

I just got a steal on an almost entire conversion from a '97 for $1400. Only thing it did not come with was tranny mount, torque arm mount, and x-member which I am going to fab. Gonna replace the clutch too, so all total I think I am looking at about $1600 for the swap. I got them from a guy over at Camaroz28.com haven't recieved the parts yet, supposed to be here by monday, so I can't comment on if I was pleased or not.

I did my swap for under 1500

tranny, bellhousing and flywheel was 900
LT4 pressure plate and clutch disk new from valeo, 225 dollars
100 dollars for the hydraulics new from GM

50 shipped for the pedals ( i think i over paid)

Made my own crossmember however i haven't sorted out the speedometer yet. If i had a TPI setup, it would only cost me an extra 80 bucks for the SGI 5 box...but i don't so i have to run the electronic programmable speedo from autometer for 200.

Could try ChevyHighPerformance's tech articles on their 3rd Gen T56 Swap as well.
