You can get a carrier from auburn, eaton or a variety of places. I would look on e-bay for a 26 spline 3 series carrier. You can go with the zexel takeoff from SLP for $99 but you would have to swap over 28 spline axles. Which would be a good thing anyways.

ok, mabye i need to ask in different words. do i need to change anything on my 84 TA to make his 99 TA rear work in my car? mine right now is 3.73 open rear end, his was a 3.42 posi. i want to keep the 3.73 gears from mine but use his old parts to make it posi. so once more. do i need to change or get anything new or different to do this? keep in mind i don't know ANYTHING about rear ends so advising me to make sure the carrier series is the same is pointless bcuz i don't know how to check and what i have?
right now with this carrier stuff i'm VERY

i dont think youll be able to use 4th gen 28 spline axels because theyre 2" longer i believe. youd need axels from a 88?-92

i figured that i would need to up grade to some 28 spline axels ffrom a later 3rd gen, (i'm not sure but i thought 84 was the last time the 26 spline was used with TA's) but what about everything else, like the carrier and using my 3.73 gears instead of his 3.42?

Junk yard is the only cheap place to get those thirdgen 28 spline axles. Otherwise you can get any length/size axle (for the most part) that you can dream up from places like Strange and Moser. A set for something like a C-clip 10 bolt will run you about $260 shipped to your door.
The spline of the carrier and the axles needs to match. No mismatching. Ever, period.
Ede covered this, but once again, any 7 1/2" gear set will work on any carrier - posi or otherwise. No need to change gears to go from non-posi to posi.
Right now you have 26 spline axles and a 26 spline open carrier. Most aftermarket carriers are 28 spline for the 7 1/2" 10 bolt but I know the Auburn can be had in 26 spline. The cheapest way for you to get a "posi" is to buy a Powertrax or a minispool. The minispool is a bad move on the street as it will mechanically lock the axles together and eventually something will break. Not to mention it makes the car drive like poop and push the front end all over the place. The Powertrax is a bolt in locker assembly that replaces the spider gears inside your existing open carrier. They will still allow differentiation of the axle but will lock the axles together when you are accelerating in a straight (or fairly straight) line and thus spin both tires (given there is adequate power to do so).
How much money have you set aside for the budget for this project and would it be an accurate assumption to assume you will be paying someone else to do any mechanical work on this project?
All comes down to money really.......
