The gy i bought my car from had it sit for about a year. Before he parked it, it drove perfect. ( i know for a fact, no question about it). Not i bought it from him and it does not shift into 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, when it is in drive. I just found out today that after he for the car he pulled out the radiator and just thet the tranny lined that run into the radiator bleed out.So for about a year or so, it sat with really low fluid in the tranny. Could this be why it wont shift? I have changed the filter, and the fluid, and added the lucas tranny fluid to it to try to help it out. THere was NO metal in the pan when i pulled it off. Could the governor be rusted from not having fluid filled in the tranny? Any other ideas? And last question ,do you think a professional tranny flush would help?
Thanks for the help!

could be one of those ironic things that went right before he stopped driving it. or maybe it went and he stopped driving it? how many miles does the car have on it?

Sounds like a governor problem - possibly either a stuck valve or stripped gear. Pop off the round steel cover near the trans tailshaft and remove it and check it out.
the car has 79k miles on it. I got an estimate of $95 to have a tranny tech to fullyreplace the governor.
Also, what would i be looking for if i were to pull hte governor out?

Well, if the nylon gear is bad, that'll be pretty obvious. Other than that, you just simply check to make sure the flyweights and the spool valve inside the governor body both move freely. There really isn't much to it.Originally posted by germ83

You do not want to pull the governor out... they are put in to control power so you dont blow your engine... without it you will run into a lot of problems and the engine will more then likely blow quickly.

1. Remove governor from transmission
2. Check for damaged, old or hard gear. Replace if needed.
3. Hold governor with gear in one hand
and weights in the other.
4. Twist unit to see if gear is loose (broken
in governor). Check for weight assembly being
loose on body of governor. Unit should appear to be 1 piece.
5. With gear up, look at spool valve inside
governor body. Squeeze weights together and release.
Valve in governor should rise and fall. It must
move freely.

Is it possible to remove the governor without dropping the tranny? I am in apatments and i dont want to but if i have to then i will. Also, do you think $90 for a shop to replace my governor is too much? (that is an option i am considering)

my 700R4 did the same problem. it is in a chevy cargo van that sat for a year. one of the neddle bearings in the tranny rusted. so whem i bought it and drove it the neddles in the bearing fell out and one stuck in the throttle valve. that is what caused mine to stop shiffting. i did not catch the problem in time so they fell in the gears and ripped them up.

The price seems real reasonable. I would just pay the money. I rebuilt the 700R4 in my TA, and when it came time to get that cover off the case it was a PITA! That was with the tranny out of the car too. We destroyed it in order to get it out of the case and I had to buy a new one. I can't imagine how many cuss words I would have yelled trying to take that out with the tranny in the car. But it all will depend on how much it is rusted into the case.Originally posted by germ83

But before you pay the money or tear into that, I would double check the fluid level. These trannies will act just as you are describing if they are even a pint or two low. I know you changed the fluid but check it again on level ground to be sure.

I've had the governor in & out of mine several times. It takes me about 10 minutes. Jack up the car. Knock the cover off with a hammer & pry bar. Pull out governor. Swap weights or springs. RTV the cover. Tap it back on & test drive.Originally posted by germ83
