Best tools to cut holes for 5spd
Best tools to cut holes for 5spd
I'm coverting my car to 5spd because thats what came with the donor car.
I have the holes marked on the tunnel and firewall but I'm not sure what would be the best way for me to cut them.
I'm not sure what to rent or buy. would a jig saw work? what kind of blades then? Or should should I invest in a sawsall.
Can someone point me in the right direction, i don't know much about theses things other than what the look like.
thanks.

To get the holes in my fire wall i used a hole saw.. it is very fast. took less than 30 seconds to drill though the firewall and left a perfect sized hole. second i used a torch to cut my floor. i just laid out my lines checked for saftey laid wet shop rags everywere and in about a minute it was done. it took me less than 5 minute for both holes. good luck. and make sure the master cyl hole is lined up perfect....
Biggest hole saw I could find was 1 13/16. I'm not sure thats big enough, but I'll find out this weekend when I'm home.
I'm bidding on a sawzall on ebay too. I'm sick of using a hacksaw to cut everthing anyway.
Thanks all

If you have access the best way is a Plasma cutter, but a sawzall will work just fine as stated above.
And do make sure the master cylinder sits in the hole right in relation to the pedals.
The padding under the carpet should have cut out spots where the holes go in the firewall if it's your original carpet.

best way in my opinion is tin snips.
the floorpan is THIN sheetmetal.. sharp snips cut thru it like paper.
zero chance of catching your car on fire, very easy to use, and best of all, a set of 3 (left, right and straight) is only about $12.....
for the firewall, use the correct size holesaw.

Being as there is nothing in the car to light on fire (new old harness, new carpet going in), I'm not too worried about fire. I'll just clean up that oil that leaked out of the T5.
But I do own tin snips, and being the cheap **** I am, I just might try that. That auction i bid on for the sawzall got a little high for my tastes.
Upon looking into hole saws more, I now realize there is much larger sizes available, just not in the on-line store i looked at. It appears I need something that goes in the middle as well. My ebay addiction will take care of that.
Thanks for the firewall insulation idea, I'll put mine back in to verify my markings. I imagine getting that wrong can cause some eventual damage to something.

yes getting the relation of the master cyl hole wrong will cause imediate problims. it will bend your master cylinder shaft rod and cause it not to reach or even maybee pop off. so just make sure its exact. holes size as well. you dont want to end up with 3 butchered holes in your firewall if you make a mistake
