putting in used tranny...anything i should do first

My old transmission is toasted and dont have the money to rebuild it. Had someone donate me a tranny that has 170 000 kilometers on it and has been sitting for a couple years but worked fine when it came out of the car it was in. Its going in with a new converter and i was wondering what if anything i should do to the tranny that has been sitting forever before it goes into my car.

I'd just get a trans service done on it.....you know, new filter, new fluid....the whole shabang. And hope it'll move.... Problem with trans-servicing old transmissions...if they havent been maintained, a service can blow em up sometimes, cause the CRAP that had been building up in the trans pan and inside the tranny was actually keeping the clutches sticking...

Considering the mileage...I might substitute a bottle of Lucas Slip Fix...or whatever they're calling it now.....for a qt. of trans fluid when you fill it all up.

What kind of trans is it....a 700-R4?

its a 700-R4. So are you saying i should take it to a tranny shop and have them service it. I'm using this tranny to hopefully just get me through this summer and im even doing the swap my self because i dont have the money to pay someone else to do it.

If it's just a temporary swap....hell, I'd just make sure the fluid level is ok...maybe put a little additive in it to keep the clutches good, and let it be. Just make sure the TV cable is set right when you install it....that's probably the first thing that would blow it up if done wrong. And don't do like my friend did and leave it disconnected cause you dont know where it goes.. (or what it does)...

the tv cable or a kick down cable as called on many other trannys is a cable that will make your tranny shift down when you are at wot so you aren't boggin in a higher gear. mine clips onto the linkage on my carb altho if its fuel injected i have no idear

I would NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, take it to a transmission shop. You'll never walk out of there with it again, unless you pay them. They will tear it down within seconds of it hitting the door to "check it out", and then of course it will need to be rebuilt whether it needed it before or not, and you'll pay.

Take the converter off and dump all the fluid out by standing it up on its tail end in a large pan. Get another converter if the one is just a regular stock one, such as a Dacco. Fill it back up with new fluid.

If you're real adventuresome, you could pop the pan off and change the filter. If it worked before, I'd leave it alone beyond that.

Just to add to that a touch...on these trannies, it's called a TV cable *instead* of a kickdown cable because it doesn't control merely kickdowns. TV stands for Throttle Valve... The TV cable actually controls the fluid line pressure in the transmission. The further the cable is receded in, the lower the line pressure. Smoother shifts. As you open the throttle, it pulls the cable out, and raises line pressure, providing firmer shifts and later shift points, and also applying the clutches together with more force for less clutch pack slip at wide open throttle. So if this cable is maladjusted...it's not going to just affect your kickdowns. It will affect your ENTIRE transmission and can possibly make it fail prematurely.

Yeah I would change the filter and fuild (and gasket). Then make sure you set the line pressure correctly.
