Replacing clutch-am I gettting the right parts?

This is for a 1990 GTA - stock clutch replacement.

I'm not sure if I need SUM-700103 T5 transmission, steel, throwout bearing retainer. It might be a Ford T5 part?

Please let me know if I'm forgetting anything.

Thanks,

Don

No, that won't fit these cars.

The rest looks good.

You might want to consider a set of flywheel bolts as well; and having your flywheel re-surfaced. Also, it's a great time for a trans mount and a torque arm mount, since you have to take both of those things out anyway.

Enjoy!!

RB,

Does Summit carry the flywheel bolts?

I had the dealer replace the trans mount already, but I'm not sure about the torque are mount. I don't think they replaced it. Is the dealer the best place to get one of these?

Do you know of a good place in town to get the flywheel done?

Thanks.

Don

Yes they carry them; or you can go to Cincy Speed, I'm sure they've got them got them.

I have no clue who to go to here for flywheel work. Haven't lived here long enough to really research it too much. I've been using Don's Crankshaft, down on Liberty. They so far have been OK.

Your stock bearing retainer is already steel. Fords are aluminum and need that upgrade part. Skip it unless yours is trashed (doubtful)... not sure if it fits the f-bodies anyway due to i.d of throwout bearing.

Why do things have to be so confusing?

I like Arp bolts, but there is a list of flywheel bolts and I'm not sure which size I need. I'm pretty sure it's the: ARP-200-2802 Chevrolet/Ford: 7/16 in. diameter x 1 in. long, alloy steel, black oxide finish, Pro-Series, flywheel bolts.

Should I get the torque arm mount at a dealer?

I'll think I also need the clutch alignment tool. The Centerforce DF only comes with the clutch and pp, right (no alignment tool, bolts, or TO bearing)?

The Hayes product at Jegs is $229.99, the Centerforce DF will cost me $320.24. The Zoom stuff is in the middle.

Do you think the Centerforce DF is worth the $90 extra? Everyone seems to like Centerforce the best.

Thanks for the help.

Don

Those would be the right bolts.

DO NOT get the trans mount or torque arm mount from GM. That would guarantee that they'll be as fragile as the ones that are in there. Get them in the Energy Suspension or Prothane brands; also avail from Scummit, or locally, or from Spohn (sponsor at top of page).

I'll loan you one of my "high performance" alignment tools (smoked T-5 clutch gear), if you want. I have several. I've thrown away most of the ones that have razor-sharp edges. Or you can buy a plastic one at Auto Zone for about $5.

My clutch is a Centerforce Dual Friction. So, that should give you some idea of whether it's worth it to you. Personally, I like them better than any others I've had lately.

Sounds good on the clutch alignment stuff.

I think I already got ripped off because I had the dealer do the tranny mount. Live and learn. I'll get the better torque arm mount.

I a couple of aftermarket books on working on these cars. Hopefully they cover doing a clutch good enough for a newbe.

Thanks,

Don

I wouldn't worry too much about what the dealer put there; just get one that won't break. Life is too short to drive around cheap parts that might break at the next traffic light.

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...NS%2D3%2D1111G or http://store.summitracing.com/partde...NS%2D3%2D1112G You'll have to get up under there and look to see which one your car has.

I want to cry when I look at how much the dealer charged for new motor and tranny mounts.

I'll take your advice and replace the new tranny mount.

Also, any advice on which pilot bearing to get? I'm getting one with rollor bearings because I saw you had one, but does it matter who makes it (Summit, Moroso, ...)

Thanks again.

Yeah, I know how that goes, about the dealer pricing on service; live and learn.

The dealer just isn't a very good place for servicing alot of things on an older car. But, alot of times you have no way of knowing how much more they will charge for something, than somebody else would; until you get nailed. But some things, like the trans mount, are actually pretty easy to do yourself, and the parts cost very little, so a bit of research can pay off. And on that particular item, the one the dealer put in is no better than the one that broke; in fact, when I still had a stock one in my car, I put a new one in for about the 3rd or 4th time, backed down the driveway, and broke it the very first time I let out the clutch (I guess the car accidentally hooked up better than usual for some reason). When I did that, I decided it was time to upgrade.

Motor mounts are a different matter. They're an extreme PITA to change, especially with the motor and suspension still in the car. I bet they hit you for several hundred dollars of labor for those, because of the time they take. I've taken to putting new ones in whenever I either have the engine out or the control arms off; either one makes it a more nearly tolerable job.

I think the bearings are all pretty much the same... in fact, the dealer carries them too, for about the same price.

Finally ready to pull the trigger...

Just three more questions:

1. Moroso roller pilot bearing ($14.95) or Summit brand ($12.95)?
2. Should I get a Lakewood HD clutch fork for $35.95?
3. Should I get a Lakewood Adjustable Clutch Fork Pivot Ball for $16.95?

I read in a magazine arcticle (can't find it now ) that it's a good idea to replace the ball stud and clutch fork too. Does this sound right?

I may have some light to shed . . .
I did the job about 2 years ago, not a problem since.

I purchased the lakewood HD clutch fork and Pivot Ball -- if your reusing the GM bellhousing neither fit.

As for the bearing I purchased the centerforce throwout bearing

As far as the pilot bearing goes, the Summit one has worked fine for me. Probably not a bad idea to get a HD clutch fork either. I know nothing about a adjustable pivot ball though.....

RB83L69 : Cincy Speed?!?! I've seen your sig numerous times, and I didn't realize you lived close to Cincinnati! Born and raised there myself....I've heard of Loveland, but never went there. Small world...

RB83L69 (Robert) was kind enough to take a look at my car. It's nice having him in our neck of the woods.

He confirmed I needed a new clutch, but I'm just now getting the parts together.

Adambros,

Thanks for the tip on the clutch fork and pivot ball. I am using the stock bellhousing and was worried if these might not fit.

The bearing I was refering to is the pilot bearing that goes in the crankshaft. Already have the throwout bearing ordered

Yup, the Summit one is fine; for all I know, they might all come from the Acme Pilot Bearing Co., and everybody just re-pacakges them. Every one I've ever seen looked exactly the same..... GM, Summit, Moroso, etc. etc. etc.

Yes, I'm in the Cincy area nowadays; Loveland is to the east of town, next to Indian Hill and Montgomery.
