Transmission cooler question

Normally, I would ask cooling questions in the Cooling board, but most times those people are about as useful as a one legged turkey, and this DOES have something to do with transmissions....

I see two different transmission coolers, one with a fan, and one without. From my understanding about cooling systems, the fan becomes useless above 45mph. That is also where most transmissions start to develop heat.

Basically, is a cooler with a fan worthwhile? I am looking at a permacool unit, and its rated at 24k transmission and 7k oil with the fan. (The largest model of that line.)

Thoughts? I am running this with AN fittings too.

I wouldnt even bother with a fan for the trans cooler. Just install the cooler in front the radiator and you should be fine. I installed a B+M trans cooler on my last Z and just put it infront of the radiator and it worked great.

I've got the biggest cooler with AN fittings BTE sells and dont have a fan yet. Hwy it runs 150* and at the track so far 150 is the hottest is gotten.

I've had the tranny temp gauges installed in the car since last year, but did'nt wanna buy a thick pan for the old TH350 i had so I could drill/tap the pan since I knew the TH400 was going in. Kinda nice to be able to monitor the tranny finally.

Now I just need an oil temp gauge and I should be set. I did see BTE is now offering a pressure gague to hook into the tranny. Sure would nice as it'd make trouble shooting alot easier if something does'nt work right.

Hope you have more success than I did doing the inline mount. I could never get the gague to show any temp. I bought a brass T and the needed adapters to get the sensor mounted on top and still have the fluid pass straight through. Might've just been the way it was mounted though.

On a side note for proper mounting it should be in the pan since this is the fluid going to be sucked into the tranny for use. This way you know what the temp is for the majority of the fluid. I've always wondered if I coulda got a B&M drain kit, and instead of putting the plug in the small hole if I could've installed the sensor instead. Never really pursued that route, but think it would be possible.

Mine is going to go between the metal hose and the radiator on the top. (Hot side.) I will probably point it down if I can. (Where the sensor portion faces up.)

No way it cant get fluid that way.

I used the B+M sending unit to read the temp. its is jegs number 130-80214. It is basically a chunk of square aluminum that that has an inlet and outlet for the fluid to pass straight through. there is a hole taped into the top of it for the sender. then you just crimp a terminal on the end of the wire and tighten it down on the sender.

UPDATE: I did some searching and found this for you guys wanting a sender for your gauge. this is the one I used on my last car not the B+M one.
