ok on the 91 when im driving and push the clutch in either 1st or 2nd gear, i get a bad grinding, it goes away *** soon as i pull it out of gear and put it in neutral, or give it gas and keep driving. The previous owner said it could use a new clutch. Is this all it is or what is fubared in my tranny.

come on i know someone here has to have some idea what could be causing this

Your pilot bearing is bad or dry.I bet at times it gets hard to shift.

you know i had trouble installing the pilot bushing.it was my first rebuild.perhaps it went in crooked.how do you get that thing out.some tool or drill it out...lol

You can actually rent a pilot bearing puller from most auto parts stores. Checker auto here just makes you pay a deposit on the tool until you bring it back, then they refund it, making the rental free. Tool works great in most cases. While you're there, take a close look at your throwout bearing and make sure it's not dried up or worn out, as this will cause similar noises too. When you install your new pilot bearing, the best tool to use is an old tranny input shaft and a hammer. If you don't have one of these, the next best way to install it is to use a socket that's the same diameter as the bushing along with an extension you don't mind hammering on. You want to drive it in until it's perfectly flush with the hole in the crankshaft. One last tip for ya. Buy the roller pilot bearing instead of the solid bushing. You can get them from most parts stores, or Summit and Jegs, and they work much better than the solid ones.

yes i know it was the pilot bearing, i replaced it about 3 years ago when i did the clutch.
adampousson i sent you a private message a week or so ago when you asked about this, if you didnt get it, everyone is right, it is your pilot bearing, itd be a good idea to replace it, you can rent the tool like others said, when you replace it use a roller pilot bearing from a chevy s10 long as its 94 or newer the year wont matter its only about $18 and you wont have to worry about shipping
