Mini Spool on 7.5 10 Bolt *Good or Bad?*
Ok i thought i had posi on my car since i have done numerous burnouts with both tires spinning. But when i punch it off the line just one spins. I seen a mini spool in summit and i know that i will lock both axles all the time. I have a 383 with 500+HP and need both tires to spin so i can get more traction. Is putting in a mini spool a bad thing? I heard that sometimes going around corners its a little hard but not sure. Im going to be using it as a weekend warrior and some other fun times. Would it be alright to put in a spool or would i be better off getting a brand new posi unit? I'm going to put drag radial b/c right now at 50mph when i punch it it just lites up the tires. Anyways i appreciate your guys input.

Either get a posi or a powertrax locker. The powertrax will replace your spider gears so there's no messing with the gear setup. A mini spool on the street wouldn't be a good idea me thinks.

I'd get a TRACTECH Detroit Truetrac. Its a gear driven limited slip. It the best of both worlds because it has not clutchs and is indestructible.

well right now money is kind of tight and ive seen some posi units go on ebay for around $125. If i get it off there how can i make sure that it is a posi unit or not? I dont want to get ripped off because one of my buddies did when he got his.

Just look at it, it will be more solid in the middle, because thats where the posi clutchs are. An open differential is well open.

Mini spools-Bad
Full spools with the right axles-Good
My friend has gone through 2 sets of axles in his old car using the mini spool in his Ford 9" and street driving-snapped the ends right off the axles.
Your best bet is street driven is a posi unit of some sort. I like the auburn type personally since if they start to go away they're rebuildable and will get you home-you screw up a worm gear posi-your dead in the water taking out ring/pinion teeth also.

Mini spool probably wouldnt be cool for the street. But if its not the daily driver then it might not be too bad. Car will jerk/rattle and tires will chirp/squeek when you turn (as the outside wheel catches up). I plan to run one in my 84 but thats track only (drifting) with a rearend I dont mind blowing up. Do you have 28 spline axles? You could use the SLP drop in posi, $99. I think one is on ebay right now for under $50.

i have the 26 spline axles right now and probably will be driving it like 3 times out of the week. The posi units i see on ebay are the "gov lock" positraction ones. Do these carriers spin both the tires? Here is a link to one on ebay that im looking at:

p.s. if i have a posi at one time and now its just spinning one side does that mean the cluthes or something going out? Anyways i appreciate your help

well you wont enjoy a spool on the street....but if you have a 500hp 383 I would put some 28 spline axles in that thing and get yourself one of those zexal torsen take out posi units from a newer fbody. I see them on ebay all the time pretty cheap. If money's tight you could prolly dig up some 28 spline axles from a junkyard camaro pretty cheap.

You don't want a "Gov Lock". They are not suited for either high HP, or pavement, or traction. They are intended for use in 4WD trucks with little weenie motors like 4-cyls and 6-cyls, off-road, in mud and such where there's poor traction. They WILL grenade when used in an application with both power and traction.

i was thinking about upgrading to the 28 spline axels and and the zexal posi units from the newer f-bodies. That will probably be my best bet. Now if i do that with my 3.73 gears fit on that newer 28 spline carrier?

Personally I wouldn't waste the labour to puit ANY upgrades into a ten bolt even if the parts were free. Just too dangerous IMO and with 500 horse??? ticking time bomb. At least get a 9 bolt so you have the piece of mind of bolt on axles and less worries of a crash.
my buddy gave me his pro series auburn unit and is using a mini spool in his s-10 that has 26 spline axles. he runs mid 10's all yearlong.gov locks are weak just sold mine on ebay. he said he just makes wide turnswhen he drives it on the street but its mostly a track car.

DO NOT run a spool on the street. The car will push like a plow in the rain, it will eat tires, if you break an axle the car will turn right (or left) faster than you can keep up with it. The dragster guys who run spools usually maintain their stuff and they replace things before they break, Street guys run it till it breaks, which, if it's an axle, is disasterous. I run a 7.5 with an Auburn posi a girdle and a 4.11 w/o any problems (besides the T5 will give up before the rear will). Locker rearends ar eOK if you can put up with the racket and popping. But IMO a posi is the only way to go. If you're really putting out 500HP (?!) I'm surprised the 7.5 has lived this long. Just cut to the chase and get a 12bolt or a 9inch.
In the mean time read these guy's page on "what is a differential?"

You can mess around witha rearend and dump a grand into it, real easy, so if you're gonna do it, do it right the first time.

well i just go the car out of the shop last week and tried it out last night. If i do a brake stand it will spin both but if i just straight punch it off the line it lays one fat strip. I got it to spin in 1st,2nd,3rd and OD. (I was at 60MPH and broke traction when i went WOT). I need to get posi and some traction because im easily loosing time just spinning it. Im looking at a Detriot locker but they are pretty expensive, but i am going to need something to hold that power.

Have you done any suspension work to gain traction? LCARB's will help in that department. How about tires? Good tires = traction. Sounds like your posi is just worn.

i had some bad wheel hop before but then i bought the sphon LCA's and havent had any wheel hop since. I still would like to get a torque arm and panhard bar. I got the cheap Kumho tires on right now and they dont grip worth crap.
