9" posi swap

I have an open ford 9" rear end. What is the cheapest way to convert it to posi? Since I don't know jack about these rearends, can I possibly get a parts list that I need to buy for the job? I know I need a posi carrier, but I'm in search of more information. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

buy a posi carrier with the correct spline count to match your axles and swap it

is a posi carrier the same thing as a third member? If it is, is their any way to just rebuild my third member to be a posi or do you need a new 3rd member? Also.. can you pull the third member with the rear end on the car, I have a lift...

How about a Detroit Locker? That way it acts like a spool on the straight aways, yet is forgiving on the street, as the teeth disengage as you turn corners, and lock back up after the turn. Just food for thought, if you are upgrading anyway...and yes, the third member refers to the center, that can be removed as a unit, after the axles are pulled. That way you can toss that puppy up on a bench, and change gears...sweet! At least Fords are good for somthing...BTW, do this upgrade, with some 31 spline axles, and your rear problems will be a thing of the past. NEVER USE SYNTHETIC in a 9in. ...Tom

say i but the detroit locker and 31 spline axles, should i get an overhaul gasket kit? anything i should know before doing this? And, if anyone on this board can contribute any input on the detroit locker(that have one), i'd appreciate it.

I have a Currie built 9 in. in my Formula. It has the heavy duty nodular iron case upgrade, heavy duty pinion support, and it is a large bearing case,(3.062) along with the before mentioned, Detroit Locker, No Spin differential. If you have never installed a gearset before, Ill assume that you do not have the equipment to do it properly... Youll need an installation kit, which should have everything you need to do the install. A pinion set up tool , and a dial indicator are a must. Oh yea, dont forget the gears. Or you can have a professional do it for you. Make sure he has the tools needed to do it properly. You supply all the parts needed, and he should be able to do it for about $100.00. You can watch him, if he lets you, and after that you can do your own gears. A 9in. will easily handle 450 lb ft of torque in stock form. You can go all out, but it isnt really nessassary. the locker set up properly, is as strong as hell....Good luck...Tom
