Need an answer

On my '89, 1 piece rear, roller block I used a lightweight flywheel #14088647, 153 tooth, from an '88 Vette. Now I am gonna be using an '86 1 piece rear 4 bolt main block. Am I gonna need an earlier flywheel? If so, do I also need a different starter AND presure plate? Did a search, couldnt figure it out from previous threads.

The bolt pattern on the later model 1 pc stuff is the same. If I understand your question it will work fine. The 153 tooth matches the straigt across starter nose.

I had an '86 305 (86 T/A R.I.P)
It was a bastard engine.
It had the one piece seal, bosses for the roller spider but was flat tappet, had perimieter style rocker covers.
I had a hard time getting a starter from Autozone. the second one fit.
but I cannot remember which one it was.

1 piece RMS engines and 2 piece RMS engines use specific flywheels. The starters are all the same as long as they are for the right flywheel (153 tooth with appropriate starter, 168 tooth with appropriate starter). The starter didn't change from 1-piece ot 2-piece engines.

The p.plate pattern is the same on the flywheels. The difference from flywheel to flywheel is that the pattern on the crank flange changed. The 1-piece RMS engine has a round flange so it will allow you to slide the seal over the crank. The 2-piece RMS engine has an irregulaly shaped flange because the seal is inside the engine.

True and not true.

My starter from my '76 350 would not fit my '86 305, same size flexplate. Bolt pattern was different.

Some blocks are only drilled for one pattern or the other. While you can interchange the flywheels or flexplates if the block is only drilled for one starter or the other you're stuck usign the fwheel and stater that is dictated by the pattern on the block. I'm running the 153 tooth starter that came from my '74 Nova on my '86 IROC Z28 right now. I just installed the 168 tooth starter from the original engine/trans combo from the Nova in a friend's 1-ton truck.

All GM long & shortblocks are drilled for both patterns. They also have both dipstick holes. Be sure to plug the one you don't use. Don't ask.
