They are a 3 series carrier posi out of 10 bolts. They came from 4th gens (excpet the ones that had the Aubrun option and the '98 model year). Any 3 series gear will work with them.

no 3.42 is a 3 series gear 4.10 would be a 4 series gear. you can also buy gears of a different series with a 3 series bolt pattern

You might check to see that you actually have a 3.42 rear in that car... Sounds like a lot has been altered on it already...

there is no differance in bolt patterns from one series carrier to the next, reguardless of what you might read on here. there is a differance in the flange thickness on the carrier between carriers and maybe a differance in gear thickness if the gear maker made a gear set to fit a carrier series it wasn't originally offered in.

the difference in series of carriers is the location of mounting flange for ring gear
known that for years, ive disassembled many semi floater rear axles, and full floaters too, car, truck, van, etc.
axles i haev been inside within last ten years so far:
gm 10 bolts, 12 bolts, 7.5/7.625, 8.2", 8.5", 8.875"
dana 44's and 60's
9" fords, 8.8 fords
47-72 eaton/gm corp truck axles,
73-up 14 bolt gm truck 10.5" FF and 9.5" SF
etc.
thanks
