Hurst.

Buy a Competition Plus shifter, and the "installation kit" for a 82 Camaro/Firebird with whichever transmission you have (Saginaw or T-10). I think the kit is still available for both.

If you get a Competition Plus shifter, like I am going to, you need the one for a '63-67 Corvette, since there isn't one with a part number specific to the 3rdgen chassis.

awesome info ,this should become a sticky where to get this stuff . I got a question , how much is the shifter and the install kit and then will it fit my 1985 engine with 305 tpi and an auto or do i need a differnt bellhousing , and is the rear main seal ok too , i know when i was lookin at doing the 6 speed i had the wrong rear main seal . so does that matter.

There is nothing that "attaches to the car". It's a 4-speed.

The shifter is just that: the shifter body. Period.

The install kit is just that. It's all the pieces you need to put the shifter into a car. It has the rods that go from the shifter to the transmission shifter shafts, the handle, any brackets and hardware to hold the shifter to the trans, etc.

Basically, if you have nothing but a 4-speed and a car and a hole in the floor, if you buy those 2 parts, you'll be able to shift your transmission after you're done.

I can't begin to tell you how many Hurst Comp+ shifters I've put in my cars over the years. I can think off the top of my head of 5 that I've gone out and bought new. And that doesn't count all the ones I got on 4-speeds I bought or traded for, or scored at swap meets, in cars I bought, etc. etc. etc. It's one of the most familiar parts there is, to those of us with a little experience in this hobby. It was one of the staples of life up until I got mostly out of the 4-speed thing about 20 years ago when I got this 83 car.

Yeah I like the link and all; but all anybody's gotta do is use their brain a little bit, and they can find that catalog, same as me. I don't "know" anything that can't be duplicated by Google, as far as that goes. In essence, the answer to "where do I get that stuff", is "the Internet". Life sure was a hassle before the Net was invented. We actually had to go down the street and look at a piece of paper. What a pain that was.

It's better if it's not so that people ask the same thing every week.

one other problem , where do i get the pedals for use with a 4 speed and all that stuff. The install kit doesnt come with the levers to make the clutch pedal move the 4 speed linkage and stuff. I thought their was some thing that bolted to the engine and car or something ?

The part you are talking about is the z-bar setup for the clutch.
There is a pivot stud that bolts to the rear of the engine block and a small mount that bolts to the frame under the master cylinder. The zbar goes between these two parts. Probably hard to find these parts.

'82-83 were the only years to use a manual clutch setup with a Z-bar and rods. Its probably going to be pretty hard finding that setup. '84-up used a hydraulic clutch which should still be easy to find the parts in the junkyard.

No, nobody makes them any more. GM doesn't even sell them. Although, they sell the engine end pivot ball, as that fits alot of vehicles. Expect to have a REAL HASSLE coming up with the pedals (which are significantly different from the hydraulic ones) and the "Z-bar" and all the other pedal linkage, and the bracket that bolts onto the "frame" for the car end of the "Z-bar", and the little boot that goes in the firewall for the rod to go through. All of that stuff is pretty rare.

So then, this is not actually a 4-speed car that's just missing its transmission, I take it? Do you have the right bell housing and all that?

Sounds to me like you're at the very beginning of a long and patient process of waiting for parts to appear, and getting into alot of bidding wars. Don't get in too much of a hurry. I hope you haven't already disabled your car.

I guess I got REALLY lucky with my find then... I litterally got EVERY needed part with my T10... pedals, Z-bar, linkage, bushings, shifter, bellhousing... litterally everything. Only $500 cdn (shipped) too!

i did this swap a year or so ago...had an auto that i put in a 4 speed with manual linkage. i found the pedals and z-bar on ebay i think.. but i have seen the 82-83 cars with sticks in the junkyard...just gotta go up to every old firebird and camaro in the junkyards..but once you find all the parts it is a pretty easy swap...
