Will a 4th gen rear hold my 500hp 383?
Hey all,
Simple question here...
Will a 1993 Firebird stock 10-bolt rear hold up to the beating of a 383 stroker pushing approx 500HP?
I got one that I can have for $200... but is it worth it??

If you use street tires, they will break loose long before the rear will come apart, so it might have a chance.

Okay, that's a big help. I'll call the guy today and tell him that I changed my mind. I have a set of ZR1 wheels with drag tires going on in the spring so I see now that it won't work.
If I buy a set of Moser Axils from summit or jegs, will the stock gear-housing hold?
I want to buy a set of 3.73's and posi, so if I kept the stock 10-bolt it would be the only stock piece. Am I okay with my stock unit or should I consider finding a new/used 12 bolt?

If I remember correctly, the axles aren't the weakest part of the rear end (although the 26 splined ones won't last long) but rather our dinky 7.5 ring setup. So, no, buying new ring and pinon gears and a posi won't save the rear. They are just not very strong rears, and 500 hp is usually out of their league.

I don't see why everyone says that 10 bolts don't hold up. The only reason I see that one would tear up is if it's worn out and the clearances are not right anymore. I hear about these so called weak 10 bolts at the track running 11's and 12's all the time with slicks on spray. Me being one of them. I have a 406 with a 125 shot right off the line with slicks running 6.90's in the 1/8th. This equates to about a 10.80 or so in the 1/4. The 60' times are low 1.6's. The rear was put together about 4 years ago with an Auburn posi and Richmond 3.73's. The axles have 28 splines and are stock. I am planning on a set of mosers though. It's just a junkyard rear from an 89 third gen. My engine has more than 500 hp and have had nothing but good luck with it. There is hope with your 383 and the 4th gen rear. Just freshen it up and it'll hold. Also, I have a 94 6speed with 144,000 miles on that I use ET streets on. I have dumped the clutch right off the rev limiter before and it doesn't spin a bit. Just takes off and goes. I use N2O on this car also. If these rears were so weak it would break for sure. Bottom line is build it and you'll be fine unless you have lots of extra money then get a 12 bolt. My 2 cents worth.
