700R4 2nd to 3rd under full throttle

When I am on the gas hard, my tranny WILL NOT shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. it will redline and just stay there. Then I let off and it takes about 5 seconds before it finally shifts up into 3rd.
Under normal conditions, it shifts perfectly fine but when i go to pass somebody or somthing like that, there is definately something wrong.

Remove, disassemble, clean and reinstall the governor if it checks well. This is likely where your problem is.

Sounds like typical 2-3 shift flareup with the 700r4. Mine does it at the track. If I lift slighly then it shifts, but not a WOT. I have searched many post about this. It is a weakness in these transmissions. Most of the time, the rpms will go up about another 300-500 before shifting out, but if you are shifting at 5500 or higher, it puts you into the redline.

Both of my 700r4's did this before they died. I heard it was the clutches getting weak but honestly I am not sure. TCI street fighter th350's shift out of 2nd at WOT

you sound like you might not have enough line pressure and this could be the culprit. As the floor guy posted you could also have governer problems although a lot of the time I have found that not enough line pressure is the culprit. You have to be careful though cause on the other end is if you install two many things with a automatic featured valve body you can have to much line pressure which will cause it to also not shift

The 700R4 & the 4L60E have this same problem. The transmissions have a 6 clutch 3-4 pack from the factory, and that has been a problem from the beginning (1982). Since then the factory has added a larger main boost valve, the Corvette servo, different clutch material (4L60E, 3 different changes), slightly larger feed holes, etc., without much success. It wasn't until 2002 when the 4L65E was introduced, that it finally had a 7 clutch 3-4 pack from the factory. I have been using 8 or 9 Borg Warner Hi-Energy's clutches in the 3-4 pack for many years with much success. The govenor will not do this, unless it has been changed to a lighter weight. If the 2-3 flare up just started, I would add the Corvette servo, as a start. This might solve this, if the 3-4 clutches are still in good shape.

I saw on ebay somewhere a 2-3 and 3-2 valve that's supposed to correct the flare up. Is this something worth looking into or is it a waste of time and money?

The flare up is not caused by a valve, so I do not know what they are talking about.

Axle/Gears: waiting on a new rear!!!!
My 700R4 has been sitting for over a year before that it was rebuilt and had about 6000 put on it before I parked the car. Now I finally got my engine running and I installed a 2600 torque convertor with a bigger transcooler. When I test drove the car it would come out of 2nd then it will just rev up like its not catching 3rd gear at all. 1st and 2nd seem to work fine when I manually shift it but when I put it in drive and give it alot of gas this happens.

I got a corvette servo I haven't installed it yet but is there anything else that can cause this that is simple an I'm over looking? Like a new stainer, not enough fluid, the linkage isn't set right. I'm letting my uncle do all the work an I just thought I ask somebody else for their opinoins.

I had the flare up problem at WOT between both 1st and 2nd and then 2nd and 3rd. It was really annoying and surely detracted from my performance.

Then this weekend happened. Another TGO member I met through the forum and in the area installed a covette servo I got on eBay for 17 bucks. No more flareup. Quick, precise, strong shifts.

Just sayin'.
