Eaton Posi Vs. Aubern

Hey, I'm getting a posi rearend soon and I keep hearing rumors that the Aubern posi's are too tight and suck for corners and street riding. Does anyone know if you can add some kind of friction modifyer? They do sell a Eaton posi at

http://www.gearsareus.com/GearsAreUs...uff/posiGM.htm

I really want a posi that will let me take turns fast and have no noise . Tell me what you guys have and how it acts around turns before i buy something and regret it.

Car: 1992 Pontiac GTA
Engine: 305TPI
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: 10-bolt, 2.73
I would go with an Eaton. When I build my 10-bolt that is what the new carrier is going to be. The Eaton uses clutches not cones. Plus they are rebuildable.

rjmcgee, all I can say is "Ouch"!

I carry both of them, & the Eaton is the better way to go in most cases. The Auburn will do the job on the majority of street cars. The Eaton is rebuildable, and will take more abuse. I have not seen the Auburn explode like this before in the above pictures, you should have a warranty on this. I would look into this. Are the cones and their wear areas still in good shape, along with the axle gears? If they are I can help you out on possibly saving this unit, let me know?

Holy smokes, that sucks man. Well looks like Im going to have to go with the eaton. Plus I hear that the eaton's like to slip a little more and thats better for me, since i like to take a corner fast, without making so much noise. Does anyone know a model number for the Eaton 7.5" 10 bolt 28 spline(I think I have a 28 spline, correct me if im wrong)?

One cone is perfect and one is pretty screwed up. Looks like some debris got in it and chewed on the carrier. At least the ring and pinion are fine. I took it all apart and cleaned the housing and bearings and am just going to put an open carrier back in it for now.

Was weird, I built the rear end a year ago and it was my first one, everything has been perfect since then. Went to a 3rd gen gathering about 350 miles from home to have some fun a couple weeks ago and I noticed one time that when I spun it around got a strange feel from the back like the posi didn't really work. Played some more and then took a friend for a ride and when I launched from a stand still the car never even moved. Just a loud BANG. Wasn't even sure what had broke until we pulled the cover off of the rear end. Oh well, just glad I trailered the car up there.

I'm pretty sure that I will pick up an Eaton to put back in it later this summer.

My gears are 3 series 4.10's mounted on a 2 series carrier with a ring gear spacer. The thickness of the ring gear is determined by the diameter if the pinion gear. If I recall right the 2.73's is 15 teeth on the pinion and 41 on the ring while 4.10's are 10 teeth on the pinion and 41 on the ring. The 15 tooth pinion gear is bigger in diameter than the 10 tooth so they make the ring gear the proper thickness. You have to run the right pinion gear with the right ring gear. A ring gear that is stamped 15:41 will not work with a pinion gear stamped 11:41 or what ever the 3.73 ratio is.

i am wondering how i need to tell if i can run these gears or what i have to do. if i have to run a spacer then so be it. but I can't see running a spacer if the lower gears(numerically higher) are thicker than the higher(numerically lower) gears. thansk for the input

i have this thread started on the subject with some pics.

You could also go with the Torsen HD or the Torsen T2R.
those diffs use gears and shouldn't wear out

demetri, I am going to make the same recommendation that Zepher did: a torsen unit. They are great for cornering type activity.

RBob.

No, that spacer won't work. Sounds like it's for an 8.2". If I remember correctly, the 7.5" 10-bolt started in 1977.
