700r4 won't shift from 1 - 2
Hey guys!
I'm having a bunch of trouble with my truck here. I put a supossively rebuilt tranny into it, and I've been trying to make the thing road-worthy so I can sell it.
However, no matter where I put the TV cable, how hard I mash the pedal, or how much I baby it, the truck won't come out of first. I've revved her up to almost 5500 rpm in first, which is like 45 mph, and she still won't shift to second.
What could be wrong with the tranny? Did the guy screw me over by selling me a shot tranny that he shined up?

im not sure if you did this already but check the fluid and the fluid level. Also did you get a shift kit with it or is it just stock?

Lots of fluid As far as I am aware, it was a stock rebuild. The TV cable makes no difference, you can have it totally unplugged and the tranny still won't shift.
I'm thinking maybe something stuck in the valve body?
I'm gonna do a fluid pressure test on it tommorow, and see if the TV is having any affect on things, that'll get me started on the diagnosis I guess.

Alright, I'll check the govenor before I tear the pan and valve body off.
The tranny sat for about a year in the guy's basement, and a few months in my shop, so I'm not ruling some little check ball or something being frozen into place.
My plan right now is to do a fluid pressure test, make sure that the TV is having the desired effect, then set it according to the pressure testing. Check the govenor after that, then go ahead, and tear the valve body out, and check it over for something that is stuck, if I cann't find anything, I'll put the valve body from my old tranny into it. I had the 3rd gear band fail on it, but the valve body was just fine, so I'll wash the old burnt fluid out, and give it a shot. Its only been sitting about 3 months.

What you could try is also go drive in first and just keep slaming on the gas pedal to try to loosen anything in there.
Yeah also check the gov.
good luck bro

Well, I tore it all apart. Winds up I have a 4l60, infact, both trannies are. And both are from a 90s truck with a diesel engine. So, I found that the one I had in my truck had most of the stuff in the valve body frozen solid. I'm gonna put the valve body from my old tranny in, and see if that'll work for me.

Got the new valve body installed, and took it for a test run, I now have 4 gears, though the TV pressure is way too low for being safe. I need to physically move my TV bracket closer to the firewall so I can get the cable tighter. It'll also fix my problem with the throttle cable not opening the throttle blades all the way.

congrat's Glad you figured it out. You didnt know that you put a 4L60E in there?? If you just have that tranny rebuilt then why should all the parts be frozen
Good job

The tranny had been used once before, for about 1000 km, then the truck's engine gave up the ghost. The guy decided to drain all the fluid, then stored it in his basement. No fluid in a tranny = surface rust which = frozen valve bodies, lol
The clutches and all that are excellent, just needed the valve body replaced
I'll work on the TV bracket today yet, and get it working better

kool. sounds like you got it licked. btw, i was just trying to clarify for ramair about the transmissions. ramair had mis-read your earlier post and thought you had said you had a 4l60e.
