realitic transmission choice/ auto , manual for 406
realistically what is the best choice for a tranny for a camaro backed with a tourqy 406, I'm sure you can expect a minimum of 450ft/lbs. rear end will eventually be upgraded to 3.23 or 3.42's going for more of a daily driver performance car. so lets say pro touring set up?
loooking to run 11's and have a braggable top speed.
I was thinking of course the t-56. only after a couple days of looking into prices and upgrades plan to spend a minimum of 4 grand canadian.
I could go with a richmond? howver again probably buy brand new and stil be high dollar.
and then you have your 200r4, reason for that, more efficient than 700r4 and bettering internal gearing(specifically first gear) it replicates a th 350 but with overdrive. it would be my choice really so far.
and then last but not least for what i've thought about the 700r4, cheapest to build up and easy to find.
with an auto I woudl probalby have a 3500 stall. built with proper internal hard parts as well.
cost, probably 1800, half that of a standard. as much as i'd like a 6 speed really isn't realistic.
perhaps you guys can shine some light on this subject. perhaps recomend other tranny's as well? motor is going to be carbed makign this a very simple car so no more computers.
down the road if I wanted to as well. (saving up after time and still enjoying the car)
I could always purchase the GearVendors overdrive/underdrive set up if I had an auto. they DO make it for 700r4's or 4l60 or whatever there called. which woudl be kind of cool. more or less a very expensive bragging modification to have either a 6 speed or the gear vendors, but hey a project is never done so someitmes we do these un neccisary things

gear splitter? meaning the GV over drive underdrive deal?
if so, I would have it installed for overdrive (I believe if you install it one way its either over drive or underdrive) and most likley just use it for the 5th gear on a 700r4. I would not bother with the th350, meaning activating it at each gear. it would just make shorter shifts really. and for drag racing it would happen too quick to bother with it IMO.
I meant 6 speed for standard
hows that
thanks for the thought!! let me know if I'm not thinking of what you are though

I think it pretty much depends on what you want and what you can afford. There are both manual and auto setups that can be built to handle that much torque. I think you need to decide if you want manual or auto and then go from there.

You did mention Pro touring (which I assume is close to road racing) , then I'd get a built T-5, T-56 or go aftermarket. With 450 ftlbs, of torque, just throwing in a stock T-56 won't solve eveything since you'll be up to it's max rating. So it'll need to be built also. So the question is, how many gears do you really need?
Just my 2 cents...

My Tremec TKO-600 rules. Swapping in a stick is always the right choice unless you are all about bracket racing.

do I NEED the 6 gears. no.
just something to have like I said
no planning on road racing, but pro touring i meant a realiable vehicle getting decent hwy fuel economy and still having great handling and power.
sorry I've never actually read the definition of pro touring just see cars labelled as that, and thats what they all seem to go for, good brakes handling, big power, good fuel economy and reliable.
I really think I will be going with the 200r4 or 700r4
standards are fun to a point, but so are automatics.

build up a 700r4 with the pro-built rebuild kit. It's only 530 bucks or so and even comes with the transgo shift kit. With the OD and something like a 3.45 gear, you'd have no problem with acceleration or top speed. My GTA hit 121 in 3rd gear at 4200 rpm with a 700r4 and 3.70 gears. I still had one more gear to go but I don't have the 3/4 upgrade servo yet.

you will always get more performance out of a standard and usually better gas mileage. Performance if you can drive it that is. If you are like my buddy joe all you get is missed gears and connecting rods out the side of the block so thats on you. I still like standards better. true hot rods have 3 spd close ratio clunkers lol

Anyone here use one of those gear splitters?
Who sells them?
I like my nice low gears (th-350/4.11) for fast get up and go but i have no top end.
I might be able to pick up a 700R4 for free so i might just put another OD tranny back in the car.

actually I believe a well built 200r4 th350 or powerglide(the best)
get more effiency than a standard. probably especially with high hp. guys at the strip that want to just run fast would be using stick more often. some guys obviously want it for 'consistancy' wh ich is true but I believe it takes less power to operate a few selected autos, could be wrong? I know a glid is 5-10% power consumption
cheers

read about the six speed auto, sweet deal. however bassically if I remember my calculations on a later date a year or so agao. the final 6th gear of this is very similar to that of the 700r4 or 200r4 with the gear vendors overdrive on it as well. the 6 speed has a first gear ratio of over 4:1 WOW steep one again. thats what i was trying to stay away from.
I woudl get it, possibly will really cool an dthanks for the submit. but realistically there isn't going to be anyone who's tinkered with this set up before. and i'd want a better thatn stock set up to go in. or possibly not seeing as how this might back the new z06 which is a similar power rating to what mine will be ( z06 being a little more by 25-50hp)
however is it now going to take a special converter? obviouly I want a higher stall 3000-3500
I wonder what the stock converter is, on the corvette model of tranny(probably a lot more and just a bigger trans pan as it hold more liquid)
says the computer is self inhibiting, however requires sensors, anyone have an idea if this wouuld be an easy swap to a total carbed motor, only sensors and wiring to expect is to dist. water temp. oil pressure that kind of deal.

The Gear Vender unit it $2000 bucks guys.
Go with what YOU WANT. a Th350 will take anything you can toss at it power wise. A T56 would deff be fun though.
if I was stayin N/A and not doing the Turbo motor Id toss in a T56 with a G force rebuild kit. and have it all cryogenically treated.
