Tips needed for buying a T-56

I am going to take a look at a unknown mileage T-56 with everything needed for a swap into my thirdgen i a few days and I dont have much experience with manual transmissions. I was wondering what i can do to insure it is a decent a trans, slave, pedals, flywheel and clutch other taking the guys word for it and waiting until i install it to find out. Even basic tips are greatly appreciated.

There is really not a whole lot you can tell without driving it.
Check the bearing retainer for cracks. They are cheap but it could mean the input shaft or bearing has had some damage.
You can go thru all the gears and feel for rough spots by turning the input shaft but unless it has a bad gear that won't do much for you because the syncros could be shot and then it would either pop out of gear or be hard to go into gear. I think you are pretty much going to have to put some faith in the seller.

Just my 2¢

you really do have to drive it to make sure the syncro's aren't screwed. Make sure you get the flywheel, bellhousing, clutch assy, throwout bearing and hydraulic assy. These are the things that will kill a budget if you have to piece it together.

If the seller actually has the whole tranny unassembled you can check to make sure the clutch plate and the flywheel has nice grooves in it so it looks like it is relatively new.

Everything they have siad works.

Also check for cracks in the front plate. The plate dead in frt that has the input shaft passing thru it.

I have seen a few broke right at the collar/input shaft area and have seen a few cracked there as well.

Not sure if this is from abuse or wreck damage, but seen it more than once.

later

I just bought one and tossed it in the other day. I got mne for 1500 shipped to my door. 50K miles. Custom Flywheel. New GM hydors. hust short throw all included. Also came with a clutch fork and bellhousing.

I had to buy a new strong clutch for the 500 HP motor

And here it is all the way in.

just give the tranny a GOOD look over. And shift it a lot with a buddy holding it tight. Also def spin the shaft as fast as you can in different gears. Then HOPE FOR THE BEST Be careful f the deal is too good to be true.

Thanks Red|ine. Took me 4 hours to line up the input shaft. But yeah I guess it was a pretty good deal. If you wanna check out the motor and the rest of the car. Check out my site.

The guy I bought the tranny from was a TGO member and after he saw my site he decided to pay for the shipping. said he wanted to help out. Check it out. Later.
