TKO Grinds on fast downshift...

Hey guys I have a Tremec TKO-600 from Fortes and after fighting to get it in forever it turned out to be a pilot bearing binding problem and now that its together and has some miles on it I noticed that if u downshift from say 5th to 4th to grab an exit ramp it will go right into gear but it will grind, but it has no grind on the upshift at all no matter how hard u hammer it.. Could this be that the trans isn't aligned rigth with the crank?? and if it is how can i fix this without buying a lakewood bellhousing cause after all the money for the trans I am broke lol... thanks guys

I Have a similar problem with my t-5 when but I also have problems with it grinding into 3rd but only on cold days when I first start driving it I chalked it up to it being on its way out

With your transmission though its awfully strange I would be mighty pissed if a brand new tranny was ****in up like that

Only the best mexico has to offer...

Did you check to see if you need offset dowl pins? I know I will on mine. The centerline of the bellhousing bore isnt in line with the crankshaft centerline. Sounds like if you may have this if you had a hard time getting it to go in to the pilot bearing/bushing.

www.snapon.com. All you need is a dial gauge, preferably a decent one. I also had to make a holding fixture that screwed into the crank since the magnetic base wouldnt stay put.

Yes, check the centerline alignment first. Since it's a problem with 4th gear I'd say this is your problem.

If it was another gear it might point to a synchro problem. Typically when a synchro wears out it will give you a similar problem. A broken fork can give you problems like that too, but Tremecs rarely if ever break forks.

What fluid are you using? ATF might give a bit better shifting than the syncromesh fluid. And GM has a special syncromesh fluid with friction modifiers that will increase syncro action, but you shouldn't need it in this gearbox.

Car: VIN=85 T/A, CAR=82/3 T/A gfx, go figure. She's a T/A anyway!
Engine: 5.0, Holley 600 cfm 4-barrel
Transmission: THM350 ??
FWIW are you blipping the throttle on the down change (you know, rev the motor slightly), to help the synchromesh a little?

I know this won't solve the problem but it may lessen the grinding.
