why do mustang t5's seem to hold up better than fbodys...

and can i put one in my buddies 84' berlinetta without too many issues?

the 700r4 in his car is going to need a rebuild pretty soon and i was thinking it may be about the same cost to retrofit a t5 into the car instead of rebuilding the 700r4 so that it can handle a decent amount of power (400ish hp/tq) and a higher stall converter (2400 range). but i got to thinking about why they didn't put the t5's in the l98 cars, because they were out of the hp/tq rating, right? then i thought about all the mustangs i know running 11's on stock trannies with no problems...is the t5 in the mustang different than the t5's they put in the f-bodies? what's different about them and can i put one in our cars? what would it take?

As far as I know, the Mustangs had first dibs on the T5 design(remember the 82- first half of 84 f cars came iwth the 4 speeds). Anyway, from the beginning, the Mustang tranmisions were using the Timkin bearing setup with the straighter cut gears for a higher load capacity. It wasn't until 88 that the f bodies switched over to the same "World Class" type tranny. And yes, GM never put it behind the 350 because of a risk of POTENTIAL warranty claims due to driver abuse. As far as interchangeability, I'm not sure. The bellhousing would be different, I'm sure. Then there is the spline count on the input shaft, not to mention if the shifter is in the same location. Come to thing of it, the 5 speeds on the f bodies are on an angle anyway to allow them to fit. Not sure if the stang 5 speed is set up for that either. Hopefully, someone here might own, or know someone with a stang to answer your question fully.

the shifter housings are different between the mustang and camaro t-5. so is the front retainer. as stated before, the input splines are way different and the pilot bearing is different.

FWIW my cousin out in NB has a really hot '83 stang, he told me mustang guys have the same problems with their T5's, 3rd gear seems to be the first to be lost (hence he has a ford motorsports version)....

they don't..... and thirdgens are heavy #1 reason..... #2 or hp and tq curve are very differant

they have an offset as well but, not as much.....

input is longer and differant spine, case won't bolt to our bellhousing, no arm mount, shifter location and stock fox body t-5's have the steep 1st gear

you can switch the guts over to our case but, use a differant yoke and find a way around the inputshaft length..

or use your overdrive and your output shaft with there gears (still need to find a way around the inputshaft issue)

or option three

buy the gears for the later or motorsport ford t-5 1.95 ratio and put those gears in a thridgen case using the thirdgen output shaft and overdrive (v6 wc or v8 wc) and buy a thridgen inputshaft oh wait shoot then you just bought all the thirdgen gears and built a 88-92 wc v8 t5

put the stock t-5 in the car and when it grenades send it to g-force and they will fully upgrade it. it should be good for aroud 600hp at that point.
