Confused
I'm having some problems with the terminology. Im not getting what the difference is between a stock rear end and a 3 series. I have stock 2.73 gears and im looking to put in 3.73 i have heard you can get them from a 2.8 V6 Chevy Blazer not sure what year but i read its a direct bolt in. Should i just change out the whole rear or try to remove just the gears.
If i get them from a store i need a 3 series so thats where my 3 series question comes from.

3 series is the carrier not the rear end housing. If you have 2.73 you have a 2 series carrier which means you can only put up to 3.08 ratio.A 3 series will accomidate 3.23 and numerically lower gears like 3.73 4.10 and so on.The s10 rear is a leaf spring rear and wont bolt in so you should buy new.You can buy a ring gear spacer to"convert" your 2 series to a 3 but its not the best way to do it.You will have to buy a posi unit a ring & pinion set and an install kit to do it right.

i dont see what the big deal is guys... my car came stock with 2:73 rear ration, i purchased a ring and pinion set from summitracing, richmond gear brand, and the part is availiable for both carrier sets, just check their catalog, both are listed just need to pick the righht one. swapped mine for a 3:73 ratio into stock axle.
part # is (check and make sure) rmg-4900071 193$
i couldnt find the part # for summit but jegs sells complete rear change kits complete with bearings shims gear oil and a video everything you need (minus tools) to swap gears pn for 2 series carrier 836-49-0007-1k

You guys are correct you can buy a R&P with a thick ring gear to fit the 2 series carrier but kjvail1204 didnt know the difference between stock and 2 or 3 series and I was trying to explain it. I also thought he was upgrading to a posi unit which you cant do buy just buying a gear set I guess I got off the original subject.Good luck with the swap.

stock= factory= any part/component that the factory installed on the vehicle when they built/assembled it,
just to help clear that terminology up a little bit
good luck
