No luck searching for how tire size affects gear ratio?

This is for my V8 car with highway 2:73 gears

I just wonder which way in tire size is gonna affect me. Will I get better or worse mileage.

Now I don't want to sound rude but if all you have is neg comments on why I would change tires sizes and such, don't bother. I am looking for only positive help.

I just forgot which way it works. That is which way tire size changes rear end ratio's.

 

A larger tire turns fewer times per mile, so it's like having a slightly higher (numerically lower) gear.

 

So it may be like a 2:70 or 2:65 now, better mileage is possiable, not gonna get worse?

I chose that size as it will fits two other car I have.
I only dirve my V8 car a few times a year.
It sits a good 10-11 months a year.

 

Or wait, that image shows what I am doing. Going from a 225/75 to a 205/70

So the tire is getting smaller. gear ratio goes up? means lower mileage?

 

shorter tires means higher rpm vs mph, but not necessarily worse gas mileage. Gas mileage depends on the power band of the motor vs gear ratio. To low of rpm and mileage will fall off quick.
- also, tire size doesn't alter gear ratio, it alters drive ratio. If you have 2.73 gears, unless you change them, your gear ratio remains 2.73(not trying to be an azz, just stating technical).

 

Not changing the gear ratio but just the tire height.

Taller tire = slower accelleration, higher top speed, better fuel mileage because engine operates at a lower rpm during the same speeds. Lasts longer because of less rotations per mile.

Shorter tire = quicker accelleration, slower top speed, less fuel mileage because engine operates at a higher rpm during the same speeds. Wear out faster because more rotations per mile.

A taller tire gives a longer footprint on the ground which helps traction but increases rolling resistance.

 

Yea its not gonna really change the gear ratio but how do they say that.....
hmmmm You can effectivly change your gear ratio with taller or smaller tires???

the 4x4 crowd uses the slightly inaccurate rule of every 1inch of tire gained takes away approximately .1 out of the gear ratio.

 

So far so good, I couldn't afford the tires I wanted but I needed new ones so my Mom could drive it while her Subaru is down. Tire on it were originals I got 7 years ago on the V6, good tread, just old. I went with some "Multi-Mile Tires BY COOPER TIRE"

Internet reviews are all good, good value, traction and smooth ride.
Jist is they are just reg Coopers under a different name so they can sell them cheaper / sell more. Whole package for 4 was $201, tires I wanted were $95 each but I had to get tires now. Suppose to be 60,000 miles tires which usually means a good 30,000

Stuck 2 tires on dual GM pattern lug rims.

 

Lets bring this back up and consider Im a retard on this subject cause I sort of am as I have yet to grasp the concept of tire changes.


Ok so my V8 car with 225/75s stock a 28" tall tire and 2:73 will be slower racing wise but have more top speed.

But a 205/70 a 26" tall tire and 2:73 is more like a 2:83 or what ever, is quicker but less top speed?

Going to like a 30" tall tire would be even slower and like a 2:63 or what ever but more top speed.


So 26s in general will get me quicker times if I was racing???

Depends on the type of racing, but for a 1/4 mile time the 26" tire would probably be the quickest for you, as long as you have good traction. If you want to race your 2.8 v6, you probably want the lowest final ratio that you can get, since traction shouldn't be an issue.
