Instead of giving you an answer like vorgath, even though I know what he's trying to say is that it varies depending on year and mileage. If you buy new its gonna cost you average $2000.00 plus. I picked up a used one for $400 bucks. But on the other side of that, it needed to be completely rebuilt. I ended buying a new one from Tremec, and I'm glad I did. Depending on your knowledge of cars I almost would tend to shy away from used trannys. They kind of go hand and hand with a saying from the movie Forrest Gump, "they are like a box of chocolates...you never know what ya gonna get." If you do look for a used one try and get one from a 93-97 Lt1...shy away from later models due to driveshaft lenth problems. Or what you could do is read the tech article in the transmission section marked T56 Swap

the best method I can recommend for scoring a good t56 transmission is to talk to local gearheads. I met a guy who's friend is willing to sell a t56 with 30k plus everything needed for the auto manual swap.... for $1000. some people dont get the tranny alone that cheap. Definetly browse around though.

Unless you get pretty lucky and find some-one that pieced together the swap, and then gave up on it, it's going to be expensive. Best thing to do IMO is to sit down and figure out everything you're going to need to do the swap, and then work out individual prices for each. Flywheel, Clutch Set, Bellhousing, Pedals, Slave Cylinder, Crossmember, etc. Finding the transmission itself is hit or miss, and if given the choice I'd rather go new, or plan on a total rebuild on a used unit as not to inherit any problems. Just don't rush into it, it's a big investment, and if done right it can provide a lot of enjoyment out of your car.

That's a very vague question, that could be answered from doing a search.
6 speed - T56(the obvious) or Richmond?
How much? - Depends on how mechanically inclined you are and what you have now. You want everything new, used in decent shape, or used needing rebuild.
- The later model T56's are harder to install because of the different bellhousing bolt up and the different input shaft. The LT1 era T56 is basically the simplest to install, but since they're all years from new, it's all buyer beware. New could be bought as stock or as modified. Several companies offer stock replacement as well as modified to handle more power. Do you need pedals, bellhousing, clutch, etc or just the trans?
as I stated earlier, do a search, then post if you have some unusual question. This topic has been covered many times over.

well you could go to hawks and get the complete swap for 1900. You could do what i did and get a 4thgen thats been wrecked. I paid $1,900 for a 95T/A still very much driveable woulda fixed it but i didnt get a title just bill of sale. The guy gave me a test drive to prove it all worked great. Lt1 still very strong, tranny works great in the IROC. Im putting the motor after a rebuild and some more hp in my 85 T/A and i gotta get another 6-speed. Good thing is i can sale everything out of that 95 T/A and get what i need to buy another 6-speed. ive already got over 700 back out of it and got about 1600 or little more worth of parts to sale and im selling them cheap.

oh only thing you lack when you get a car is the custom cross member.

I got a complet swap kit with all new or rebuilt parts for $3000. I know its a lot of money, but it included everything except the crossmember and shifter handle. New master/slave cyl, new aftermarket 2 pc rear main flywheel, new clutch, choice of rebuilt LT1 style trans or new aftermarket trans.
Had a 1 year, no questions asked guarantee, just bring in the broke trans and swap out for a different one.
I've had for 2 years now, now real complaints. LOVE THE TRANS! If I had it to do over, I would do the exact same way, or buy a wrecked 6 speed car (get the LT engine with the car).
