90-92 110MPH to 145MPH speedometer gauge cluster swap

I've searched and I do know that the speedometer will be correct (after I get the new gears that match the new rear end gears), but I want to know if the tach will be right. I have an automatic, but I still want my tach to read the right numbers. I'm asking because I have the V6 engine.

It will be correct you'll have to swap the tach from the V6 car. Why do you want a 145 mph speedo in a V6 car?

Damn, I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that. I want it for the same reason everyone else wants it. My car won't have a V6 forever anyway. I also want it because I put a disk brake rear end in my car and I want the speedo that goes with that.

Is there any way to change the miles on the new odometer to match what's really on my car?

Yeah, It can be done with a flathead screw driver. Just slowly pry the numbers.

About the tach, does it need to be changed just because the redline on yhe V8 cars differ from the V6, or is there something mechanically different about them?

the tach will always read incorrectly if you swap it. The tachs are calibrated for a particular number of cylinders, and if you swap them, you have to change some parts on the circuit board.

So even if I wanted to swap the tachs, I couldn't?

Would it be better (or even possible) for me to just swap the speedometer from the 145 cluster into my V6 cluster? That would solve the tach problem and I also noticed the oil gauge has a little different numbers, 30 and 60 rather than the 40 and 80 on my 110 cluster (I have my 145 cluster right now).

This may be a stupid question, but apart from the different redline on the gauge face, are the gears inside the tach the same for the 110 and the 145? Could I just swap out that circuit bord for the tach that's at the bottom of the cluster?

Update: I swapped the chips and installed the cluster and the tach is correct! Possible problem: I drove it around and the odometer seemed like it was moving a little fast, I did the same trip in the van and my car red 1.6 miles and the van read 1.4 miles. I didn't change the odometer to match the correct milage yet, could the computer be moving it fast because it keeps track of the milage and it's trying to correct it? That's probably another stupid question since this is such an old car, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

I'm not 100% sure, but unless your new speedo gears are spot on, you could be getting the difference there. If you are 2-3 miles per hour off, it will reflect in your odometer. The car thinks you are going faster than you actually are, so you are putting miles on faster. This is how I have put almost 1000 miles on mine in a few days of driving around town. Speedo says I'm doing 55 when I'm really going 40. I just did a rearend swap with 4.11s. The speedo gears are set for the 2.73s.

You know what, you're right! I completely forgot about that. The new rear end I put in the car has 3.73 gears as opposed to the 3.23 that were on there before, the speedo is about 10mph ahead of what the car is really doing. What I did think about was that my car has the wrong size tires on it, whoever had them changed them before I got the car put on 215/60/R15 instead of the 215/65/R15 that are supposed to be on there. I guess I need to hurry up and get those new gears.

This does not work. Please no one try this, I broke my odometer trying to move the numbers. I had to peel the face plate off to replace the odometer with the one from my 110 cluster.

Does anyone know if they made two types of 145mph clusters for 90-92? The overlays I have don't match up with the numbers on the speedo.

Damn man. Worked for me. I'll send you a 110 cluster out of an 92 Rs 305 for the price of shipping. How exactly did it break?

I didn't know you actually tried it, sorry I didn't mean to make you sound like an ***. I thought you just said what you thought you might work. GM may have just changed it to prevent people from rolling back their odometers.

I tried moving them with a flat head and they didn't want to move easliy and I didn't want to scratch it up so I bit the bullet and pulled the speedo from the cluster and tried to move them with my finger and I didn't try that hard and I heard a snap and the white plastic piece that holds the metal things in between the numbers that hold them in place broke off from the last 3 numbers.

How much would the shipping be?

Does anyone know of the motor that moves the speedo needle is the same between the 110 and 145 clusters? Since I had to remove the needle and put it back in and since my speedo is off because of the new gears in the rear end and I can't really tell if it's off from where it was before.

Yeah man, the cluster I tore into was out of an 86. My car was vandilized and the cluster was all busted up, I wanted the miles to match the original. Turned over real easy. Shipping should'nt be anymore than probbaly 10-15 bucks. Pm your zip/address and I'll give you an exact price. I coud have it shipped out tomorrow. I apologize man.

That's what I figured, they changed it when they redesigned the cluster for the 90-92s. No huge deal, you didn't know. This will definately help anyone else though!
