What Tranny Do I Have

I have a 1992 camaro 3.1 automatic transmission. I was wondering if any one could tell me what tranny i have. Its beggining to slip and im gonna save up for a used tranny. Also, would it make sense to swap a v8 in sense im taking the old tranny out. ( i know the v6 and v8 trannys wont work) thanks.

you should have a chevy th350 turbo trans in there. before you decide to replace the trans id check your trans filter first. i had the same issue with my trans slipping and downshifting to get the rpms normal and my trans filter was completely clogged up. hasnt slipped since i replaced the filter so try that first before you spend money on a trans you dont need.

they haven't put a th350 in a camaro from the factory since the '70's. maybe '80 and '81.

a '92 3.1 will have a 700R4 tranny.

when swapping from v-6 to v-8, you have to change more than the motor and tranny.

How hard and how much is it to replace the filter? Is it something that can be done from the ground? Will have to replace fluid also right?

Its also shifting rough and when at full throttle i dont go any where. Could that be the filter?

if you have a floor jack and jackstands it can be very easy. just jack either one end(front more than likely) or the whole side up. drain the fluid, and the filter should be held on by like 2 screws. it took me all of but 30 minutes to do mine. just make sure you clean the pan out good and try to take out any, if not all of the dents it may have. should cost you less than 20 bucks easily.

on the 700R4, the filter is held in by a runner seal on the neck of the filter and a metal clip that can be bent out of the way and put back in place. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE OLD SEAL OUT OF THE PUMP!!!!! also adjust the tv cable. you can find instructions on this site with a search.

82TransAM_45, i was under the impression that the '82 and '83 models came with the th200. which i would change to a th350 in a heartbeat. but the '84 and newer used the 700R4.

Yep, 82/83 had a 200-4R tranny, but i wouldnt toss it out...

Nothing wrong with them really, just a bit different gearing.

The only way you would find a TH350 in a thirdgen is if it was swapped in, but keep in mind it is pretty common so chances are it very well could be a th350 if its a 3speed.

not a 200r4, but a 200c 3 speed. thirdgens didn't come with overdrive until '84. up until then it was a 3 speed automatic.
