TH350 leaking, front seal, pump or converter?

Bad news guys, I had planned on getting some new times this weekend but the trans is leaking.

Its leaking either from the pump, front seal, or the converter.
I put petro jelly on the new front seal before I put the converter in. I also used new gaskets/o-rings on the pump. I torqued the bolts on the pump to specs.

The converter is a new jegs unit. I doubt something went wrong with the converter.

Looks like I will be pulling the trans unless you guys have any suggestions.

Re: TH350 leaking, front seal, pump or converter?

Any chance the bushing in the pump pushed out and tore the front seal?

What would cause the bushing to move? To much preasure?

Should I have put sealer on the pump bolts?

I need some advice guys.

Provided everything else was properly done. Seal, oring, washers on bolts, Its likley the pump bushing is bad. There could be many reasons for this even just wear. You will need to remove the pump and replace all of these things again along with the front pump bushing.

I dont recall there being washers on the pump bolts when I took it apart. Were there suppose to be?

There were some teflon like rings that went on the pump shaft. The stock ones were like metal. One of the teflon rings didnt fit correctly so I reused one of the stock rings.

The trans has less than 100 miles on it since the build.

Yes there are little black teflon coated washers one goes behind each pump bolt , This may be the true source of your leak.

Re: TH350 leaking, front seal, pump or converter?

I had a 96 K1500 pickup that I had the tranny rebuilt in. I did the remove and install. Upon 1st startup I had a bad leak coming from the front. After I re-removed it and took it back to the shop they discovered a very small crack in the convertor where the outside meets the hub - so don't just rule the convertor out without taking a good hard look at it.

I cant remember if they had washers on them or now. I will check.
When I tore the TH350 down, I put each set of bolts in bags and taged them. If it didnt come from the factory with the, then I didnt put any on them.

I am going to jack it up and clean everything off. Then start it up and try to find the leak before taking it out.

Yeah, I will check the converter. It definatly might have a crack or pinhole.

Its is spraying a streak about 3" wide and about 2 ft long under the flywheel.

Re: TH350 leaking, front seal, pump or converter?

Well guys, I finally got around to working on the transmission.

I got the car up on jackstands then cleaned off the bottom of the trans and converter. I fired the car up for about a minute. Then rechecked underneath.

I didnt find any fluid on the front seal of the trans or the snout of the converter. I did however find a rough place on the flange. I turned the converter with the rough place on the bottom. Fluid seem to be seeping from it. I think I have a cracked torque converter. Its a Jegs 2700-3000
10" unit.

Anyone have this happen to them?

I have not pulled the trans completely yet, but will in a few days. I ran out of time and it was over 100* in the garage.
