700R4 Question?
Exactly how far must I seperate a 700R4 from a sbc for the shaft to clear the flexplate? Will 5" clear? This sounds like a stupid question, but I realy need to know It will save me a lot of work.
Thanks for any info

Re: 700R4 Question?
It depends what you're trying to do. The input shaft doesn't touch the flexplate, the torque converter does, so technically zero inches should do.

Re: 700R4 Question?
I thought i had a starter problem, but found a tooth missing from the flexplate. Now the flexplate has to be removed.
Thanks for any help.
----------
What will cause the tooth to break .The rest of the teeth look perfect.

Re: 700R4 Question?
You won't need much space for that. Unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate and push it in towards the transmission. You might be able to get the flexplate bolts out then. I've never tried it that way.
If only a single tooth was broken, it was probably just a manufacturing flaw.

Re: 700R4 Question?
To change out the flex plate, unbolt the TC from the flex plate; support the trans; remove the trans mount; take 2 of the 6 BH-to-block bolts out, one on the left and one on the right, and put a long bolt in each side; take the other 4 bolts out; slide the trans rearward as far as it will go. You need maybe 1½" of clearance to get a long box-end wrench up in there onto the flex plate bolts.

Re: 700R4 Question?
Got the flexplate changed today.
Sofakingdom's long bolt idear worked great. The only problem was fitting the flexplate back onto the shaft in such close quarters Did not disconect driveshaft
fluid lines.or anything else.
Thanks again for your help.

Re: 700R4 Question?
Thanks for the feedback! Yes in fact, I've BTDT. Glad to be able to pass along what little I've managed to learn along the way, of mostly screwing things up and doing them the hard way twice or 3 times before finally getting it right.
