Shift points too high?

My stock LB9 700R4 car WOT 2-3 shifts at 5800 Is this too high? I don't think the stock TPI would be making power anywhere past 4800...How do I adjust this without getting too serious w/ the tranny? Thanks in advance

Re: Shift points too high?

My '86 LB9 shifts from 1-2 at about 6500 RPM, and generally about the same from 2-3 (a little lower). What I do is when you feel it hitting peak power, let off the gas a little bit, which causes it to shift, then go back to flooring it.

Yeah I have done that a few times just to see how it would work out BUT it just seems like you are loosing too much power after you let off. A properly set up transmission should shift at the right RPM's for the engine at WOT. I think I might just need to adjust my T.V. cable??

You'd probably need to set up the governor.

Im not disputing this but I don't think the tranny has ever been touched internally. Can this come out of adjustment by itself/wear or what?

Re: Shift points too high?

You're probably going to want to test the tac. My car shifts at 5500 through all the gears. But when I hook up my laptop, it's really shifting at 5000 rpm through all the gears.

When driving around my tac is almost dead on accurate, but at about 5000 rpm it is off. Some are worse than others.

Wow I never even thought of that. I do remember when I last hooked up my autoxray it was off a little at lower RPM's but i never really checked up high. Thanks I will check that out also!

Re: Shift points too high?

If that is not it try a cam that will allow you to rev that high to match your transmission shift points.

X2 on the governor. The weight and springs can stick or bind even break. The gear could be worn it is only plastic.

As IROC said verify your tach make sure the RPM where it is actually shifting.

You don't want to adjust the TV cable to adjust shift points mean and nasty things could happen the the frictions.
