replacement for 83 T5
replacement for 83 T5
I need a solid replacement for my 83 T5 in my trans am, had a 90 wc shipped in but when inspected it was bad so what are my options? is there a 6spd that will bolt right in? or another 5spd better than the borgwarner t5 that will bolt right in?
Re: replacement for 83 T5
it will cost 3500$ to put in a factory 6spd with everything to install it , im not too crazy about the hydraulic clutch tho, i would like a muncie, or doug nash but where to find it is the question, does someone have the answer to my transmission needs hopefully lo-cost answers, i can also rebuild my tranny for 800$ with new gears n shafts etc..

Re: replacement for 83 T5
no direct replacement transmissions without modification.
Check astroperformance here on this site they have a gear swap they claim can hold up to 650hp, no experience myself or even heard of anyone using them.

Re: replacement for 83 T5
This is a very common question, did you try searching?
Tremec makes the TKO500/600 models if you want an aftermarket 5 speed.
The normal T-5 of course fits (I thought you had a WC T-5 in it now?)
A T-56 out of an LT1 Camaro will work. Good luck finding one in the JY's but they do exist. Aftermarket version of it exists as well, but as you mentioned $3500 or so.
Hydraulic is a good thing. I despise my z-bar linkage. That's why i'm upgrading to a hydraulic throw out bearing.

I had a WC T5 but i sent it back because gears had chips and it was in bad shape, I will no longer bother with edmonton parts places anymore. Basically what im looking for is the cheapest and best solution to keep my car manual. I would really like a kit to upgrade im thinking thats the way to go but to beef it up like you can do to the WC there must be a way to upgrade the pre 84 T5?
I dont like all the parts needed for hydraulic clutch if i do that i may aswell add rear discs and fuel injection, but my problem is im sick of spending money on this car i just want it to have good paint and a motor, then i will let it sit again so it dont break anymore
so far i have spent around 8K in maintenance, upgrades, and costly breakdowns, so far the car has all of its bodywork done, and has a good motor now i need a good tranny that will mate up good with my stock diff, so i can park it and leave it appreciate, although i will never get my money back from this car i refuse to let anyone else have it im too stubborn.

Re: replacement for 83 T5
I paid $150 for my Howe racing hydraulic throw out bearing. Done deal. I will admit I haven't installed it yet though, so god knows. But buddy who removed this from his car tells me when he put in the box is all i'll need to do. This isn't like i'm swapping over to a factory hydraulic clutch system, this is just a hydraulic throw out bearing. Simpler way to get to the end result.
You can't upgrade the pre '84 T5 very much. Gears and shafts can be, (and I quote)
"made from the purest virgin unobtanium forged from 1000 yr old ogres in the furnaces of hell", and the cheap paper thin 1984 T5 CASE will still stretch and destroy everything inside. Leading you to believe the gears just fell apart, when the root cause is the case stretch (which is harder to spot, vs shattered gears).
The spot you're standing in is a very common predicament to us 3rd genners, you are not a unique or special snowflake in your problems here, and sooner or later you'll come to the same (expensive) conclusion the rest of us have
Expensive->strong tranny
expensive->strong rear end

Nope, won't work.
You're looking for the hidden gem secret which doesn't exist. Sorry.

Re: replacement for 83 T5
Should take a look around for a Super T10 setup from an '82 Z28 or Trans Am... only a small number of them came with that trans (most got the weaker iron case 4-spd) but they can be found, and its a direct bolt-in deal for an '83 if its still got the mechanical linkage.... I did it with my '83 about 2 years ago. I got the whole setup for about $500 from a member on here, and it all bolted right up, as long as you get all the right parts from the car it comes out of (you need the trans, bellhousing, x-member, torque arm, driveshaft, shifter unless you get the kit from Hurst). It uses the same flywheel and clutch that the T5 uses, so thats not a problem. You need the drivesshaft and torque arm because the 4-spd uses ones that are about 2-3" longer than the ones the 5-spd cars use.
The Super T10 only came in the '82 V8 cars, and only about 1/3 of the V8 4-spd cars got that setup - most had the weaker iron case 4-spd. If you can find the ST10 setup, its quite strong, mine has done pretty well behind my 400-ish HP 350. They aren't too expensive usually either, just hard to find.
