700r4 tranny and a 10 bolt....both upgraded and rebuilt, but it won't last right?

I want to put in a 406 this winter and I have a 10k mile 700r4 with shift kit and a 100 mile 10 bolt with richmond 4.10's and an auburn posi unit and I'm a little distressed all this work will be for nothing if the engine tears them apart....

At what TQ, will I need to start worrying about this stuff?

Thanks.

10 bolts die all the time, sometimes from just normal abuse and driving. I have a friend who used his 700 into the low 11's before he kept braking it. Remember though this was an expensive and very strong built trans.

This website has some info on the strength of the 10 bolt: http://www.isthq.com/~dan/10bolt.html

Anybody wanna buy a 10k mile 700r4 with shift kit and a 100 mile 10 bolt with richmond 4.10's? what a joke...looks like I'm upgrading to a ford 9" and a TH400 or T56 this winter along with my 406

Ihave seen 700R4's take all kinds of crap, so my suggestion is to keep the tranny and get either a ford 9" or a strange 12 bolt. Right now I am running a 700 R4 with about 500H.P. and 480 ft/lbs of torque in front of it and its working fine. The 10 bolt rear is a whole different story, I went through 3 auburn carriers and the straw that broke the camels back for me was a broken axle. So, I junked my 10 bolt and put in the Strange 12 bolt. Anyway, back to the tranny, if you want a TH400 go for it but I would think again about the T56 because I have a few friends who spent several weekends changing clutches, and after a while they got sick of it a they both switched to TH400's.

Neil tell me about your 12 bolt. How hard was the install, what brakes are you running, how much did it cost you, will the wheel studs clear my centerline wheels? Thanks in advance.

Mike,
The install was relatively easy, however, I did have to upgrade my rear brakes to the 4th gen calipers. The cost including calipers, power slot rotors, russel brake lines and the rear end itself was around $3500.00. Concerning the studs and your centerline wheels, I would call Strange Engineering and ask them.
Oh, the reason I had to upgrade to 4th gen brakes was b/c they only sell the rear end units with 4th gen caliper mounts. The only difference between the 4th and 3rd gens, is that the 3rd gen rear-end is approximately 3-4" shorter.

Thanks Neil! Damn that rear assembly was expensive!!! My 7.5 has 3.73 Richmond gears, a cone posi out of an early 80's Monte, 26 spline axles, axle tubes welded around their circumference at the carrier, aluminum support cover and a zytanium cross pin. Before the cross pin and support cover I was running slicks to 1.88 60 foot times. I wish I had 28 spline axles and the Torsen SLP carrier but oh well. When my rear blows I plan to get a third gen rear with disc brakes and build it to the max with aftermarket axles and all but I am worried about future mods and horsepower destroying that ten bolt. There really is not cost effective rear for our cars. I did find that SLP had a Dana 44 left for our cars but it's 1700 bucks and the twelve bolt is only 300 bucks more. Any input or thoughts would be appreciated.
