how to know you transmission mount is broken
i think my transmission mount might be broken, what are some ways to tell? when i get on it from a start, it is fine in first gear, but when i shift to second gear and get on it, something hits the bottom of the floor, sounds like right by the rear of the tranny. Are there ways to tell just by looking at it? And about how much would a new one be?

sounds like you broke it to me.
I had the same symptoms a while back, so I took my car to my local tranny place. They inspected it for free (put it on the lift), and sure enough, it was split in two.
But it is very hard to see the break when the car is on the ground or on jack stands in my opinion.
But I'd bet you've broke yours. About price, you can get some stock rubber ones at AutoZone for cheap ~$10 BUT if I were you I'd get a polyurithane peice from summit or jegs. I don't know, probably around $20-30.
They're not too difficult to install, so don't let the tranny place tell you different.

I had the same thump in my bird w a ES tranny mount, it ended up being the secondary cross member mounts, one of them were ripped in half. One last thing ES doesn't recommend mixing rubber motor mounts and Poly tranny mounts. Thats why this week I just finished, putting ES MM's, tranny and secondary crossmember mounts.

I had to replace a broken trans mount on my 87 Z. You can normally tell if its broke by opening the hood, put the car in drive with your foot on the brake and SLOWLY press the accelerator. You should be able to see the back of the engine lift slightly. Mine has the torque arm that extends from the rear end housing. I'm sure that helps to lift. I don't know if this test would work on a car that's not equipped with a torque arm.

i agree with them..sounds like you definitely broke it. when i got my car i had a bad tranny mount. when i got on the gas hard, all i heard was "BANG BANG BANG". not a good sound. but it is exactly what you said...sounds like a bang on the floor near the tranny. they are REALLY easy to do. a frined of mine that worked at a local chevy dealer brought the car in the stall, lifted it up, and it literally took like 3 minutes. very simple installation.

it also could be besides the mount being bad is the bolts that mount the mount to the trans are vibrating out. in my car i hear the same sound you did and the mount was gone but the bolts were very loose as well. then a week later i heard the same sound i went under there,took out the bolts that were loose again and put a lock washer on each.
it could be from be smoken the tires i dont know?

Here's how to tell:
1. Do you have a 3rd gen Camaro or Firebird with a V8?
Yes = proceed to #2
2. Have you put a polyurethane one in it?
No = it's broken
Easy, huh?
These cars have the stupidest imaginable design in that area, they always break. My 83 with a 305 could break a brand-new one the absolute first time I stressed it. It only costs about $20, just do it.
