Please help!! Shift kit with two checkballs left over!!
On a '91 700R4, I'm installing a B&M Shift Improver Kit and have two flow checkballs left over...
I noticed this before I put everything back together again, so I double, even triple checked the directions and my work to make sure I had a checkball in every location it called for, yet I used the 6 and have 2 left over! This is for a 700R4 between '88-'92, specifically a '91. The kit instructions have a different number of checkballs being used for different 700R4 production years. Mine is the only year listed as using only 6 ***** while the other years used 7 yet I started out with 8 today??? Granted the directions also say "Do not install checkball here" in a couple spots (specifically 4 times) but what does that mean exactly? Has anybody else had this?? Am I supposed to use less checkballs after installing the kit??
Please help!! I've got everything back together and the valve body back on the car but not torqued down so I can still easily take it off.

i don't remember exactily how it worked out but i've installed shift kits and had one or more of the ***** left over. you should be able to go back over the instructions and see where you need check ***** and if you've installed them there.

I just finished putting everything back together again and the car is running fine, no evident problems yet but I haven't driven it very far either... just got it warmed up on a 5 min drive. I also found ANOTHER checkball when cleaning up ... so we'll see.. thats three checkballs left over...
I just checked the online PDF's on B&M site for the checkball locations just out of curiousity and they've got pretty much the same thing that I had in my directions but on the diagram showing the locations for the years of '88-'92 the checkball capsule on the far right is what has my attention now. My directions didn't say what this is for or whether or not a checkball belongs in there and I know I didn't put one in there. Is that a location for one of the checkballs??
End one of these topics, same stuff. You gotta drop the pan and valve body, look to see where any ***** are missing per your directions, put the ***** in their homes, bolt her up!!! if you don't do this, you could RUIN YOUR TRANS in VERY LITTLE TIME

My tranny isn't toast and I've driven about 70 miles already. I hear no weird clunking sounds coming from it, no unusual vibrations, everything seems to be working fine. I'm going to call the tech support line tomorrow first thing and even visit a tranny shop that we've gone to twice for rebuilds with the directions in hand and see what they know about it. But this checkball capsule is really starting to get me worried. Its the things that I can't tell are going on in my tranny that shouldn't be that are scary. If anybody's had experience on a '88-'92 700R4 please give me your input! Thanks.
I am telling you you may be fine, or you may fry a band in 2 more miles. Those ***** are in there for a reason. I am nto a tranny mechanic but i am smart enough to know that you will be in deep dung if you don't fix it.
The first thing the trans shop will ask is "which ball/***** did you leave out?" and you will reply "I don't know". Then, I bet, they will say "drop the pan and find out what's up.".
I know its's a pain in the rump, but you don't want to pop for another tranny rebuild, do you?

Ok this message is to put closure to this topic... today I finally got a chance to call the B&M support line. They told me if the car is running fine then I shouldn't worry about it and some people have lost Overdrive without the checkball and gain it back after replacing it. Well I HAVE overdrive, the car is running fine, better than ever actually. Then on my way to school I stopped at my tranny shop and talked to the manager there. This place has already rebuilt my previous 700R4 and my dad's TH350 (I believe thats the model) and they're nice guys. He told me the checkball I was missing is only there to soften the shift into Reverse and he usually leaves them out when rebuilding. HUGE load off my mind!! If thats all that I'm missing then I don't care, I can deal with a firm shift into reverse. So I think I'm finally out in the clear on this one, thank God! And thanks to anybody who gave me suggestions!
