4th Gen gears in My 85 ?

I asked on Camaroz28.com If anyone Had Takeoff OEM 3.42's they were willing to Sell, and I got a Reply To the Tune of

" i have 2 sets of 3.42 gears from 7.625" 10 bolts."

Will these Fit In My car ? its an 85 w/ 10 bolt ( obviously ) He is asking a very reasonable price So I would Like To jump on this If I can. Thank You In advance.

Yep, if you've got a 10-bolt, 4th gen gears will fit perfectly, if you have 3.23's now. If you have 3.08 or 2.73's, those OEM 3.42's wont fit. But I think you said in another post you have 3.23's.

Ok, you've got 3.08's then. You need a posi unit that is 26 spline, for a 3.23 or higher gears. Or you can get the SLP take-off posi, and a set of 28 spline axles from Moser, but thats probably more than you want to spend.

Okay You got me Really Confused Kevin

cant I just get the SLP posi, and Some junyard 28 splines, and the 3.42s and Put it all Together ?

If Not, What is the missing Link ? Do I need a Carrier out of a Car with 3.23's Or higher ?

AS you can see, Im new at this

I swear that Every Time I think Im starting to Know Most stuff about my car, I stumble Into something That Makes me feel Like a Goddamn Newbie all over

Yes you can get some junkyard 28 spline axles, but they only came in 90-92 thirdgens. You've got to be damn lucky to find a 90-92 thirdgen in a junkyard. Thats why I recommended getting some aftermarket 28 spline axles. Or, you can get a 3-series posi unit for 26 spline axles, and use that with your 3.42 gears. Less confused now?

Yeah Kevin, Thanks
So Basically, Your Saying I cant Drop the 3.42's Into My Open Differntial as It is Now.

But Then again, Why WOuld I want to? The car cant hook up as it is...

What am I looking at paying For the 3 series posi For 26 splines ?

Guy at the Yard Told me 75 Each For the axles, I might have to Jmp On that.

The auburn 3-series posi is $300 from Jegs. If you've got a lead on 28 spline axles from a thirdgen for $150 total, jump on it! The 28 spline axles are stronger, plus you'll have the torsen rear end.
