28 spline axle help
I'm getting a SLP take-off Torsen and will need a pair of 28 spline axles. I have the older (1985) rear disk brakes. Are all 3rd gen 28 spline axles the same for the 10-bolt, or are they different for drum and disk rear ends? My rear brakes would be different from the 89-92 brakes anyway. When I priced axles at the GM dealer, I was asked if they were disk or drum and they told me for disk brakes left and right axles were different. Huh? The 26 spline axles I've taken out are both the same. Any help would be appreciated.

They are all the same. Drum and disk. Left and right. You can pick up some good aftermarket 28 spline axles from www.drivetraindirect.com for $125 each. Part number KAC7-A7. They'll work in all 82-92 third gen 10 bolt diffs with a 28 spline carrier. Mine are in a '86 housing and '96 carrier.
Although I haven't pulled my old diff apart yet, I've heard that a 9 bolt has a left and right axle but I can't confirm that yet.

I had an 82 z28 that had disk brakes, the left axle got bent and i tied to take the left axle out of a drum brake set up and the axles were different. The length was the same but the hub where the studs are was larger on the drum brakes than the disk brakes.

I have an 83 Z-28 and did the same thing. I got 3.73's and an Auburn Posi unit. I found out that the posi needed 28 spline axles. 1988 and up use 28's so I called several salvage yards and got a whole rear end out of a 92 RS with parking brake cables for $90.00. I then took the rearend to the guy that would put the gears in and had him to sandblast and paint it black. He also welded the axle tubes all the way around for more strenth.
When I started putting the rearend in I found that the brake lines were a little different so I took the old ones and the new ones to a place that can put reverse flare fittings on the ends. That was about $10.00.
I tried to just get 28 spline axles, too but couldn't find any unless I spent big bucks for aftermarket ones. Also a newer rear probably has fewer miles on it so the bearings will be fresher.

OLDYELLR, I'm talking about the part of the axle the the rotor fits on. I tried to put the rotor on but the in side if the rotor would not fit. I could not get the rotor on so i did not check to see if the center hole was the correct size. ------------------

Gerald, do you mean the diameter of the part that the hole in the center of the rotor or brake drum locates on?

the axles for the disk brake rearend have a smaller diameter hub where the wheels studs are if drum brake axles are used the hub will be a little big for the brake setup, a friend tried the swap due to a snapped axle and had the have the hub turned down a little bit... Hope this helps...

I second the need to turn down the OD of the axle flange to get the rotor to fit over it. That was a measurement step in the Baer brake instructions for those converting from drum to disk. Some axles need machining, some don't. Just have to measure.
