ES Tranny Mount--The Shim Question

I know from reading many threads that ES's poly mount causes drive train vibration in some applications. I wonder if members using the mount might consider the following and comment.

The following cars, according to my Camaro Parts and illustration Catalog CD, were factory equipped with the shim(s) p/n 1254001:

(As can be seen below, my 85 was originally equipped with the shim. I used the one from ES with no ill effect)

82-86 2.5L L4 (LQ9/2.5-2)
82-86 LB8/LB9/LG4
87-89 LB8

The following cars weren't so equipped:

87 LG4/LB9/L98
87-91 LB9/L98
88-91 L03
90-91 3.1 V6 (LHO/3.1T)

Re: ES Tranny Mount--The Shim Question

rubber isolates better than poly-etc. . If you think it doesn't install an aluminum mount or metal mount and see what I mean. Less flex is good to a point. High horse power, reaction times, etc. but at the expense of something else trying to twist- example the trans bellhousing if the engine mounts are rubber v.s. a solid or near solid trans mount. Vibrations, a shim that doesn't like to compress because it is so thick and bent versus a flat stock shim--No comparison. sometimes stock is o.k. If needed match engine and trans mounts so they don't flex at different rates. You wouldn't put rubber body mounts on the front, poly in the middle and solid in the back would you?

Re: ES Tranny Mount--The Shim Question

Thank you, ed o, for your post, but it doesn't get at the heart of my question. I simply wish to know if the shim is the culprit where driven train vibration is concerned:

I'm in the first group above, I used the shim, I experienced no vibration. If I had used the shim in the second group, would I have experienced a different result, vibration?

Re: ES Tranny Mount--The Shim Question

Personally, for me atleast, after installing the ES tranny mount on my 86 700R4, i didn't notice any difference. It was just more solid, hardly noticeable, but what i did notice is that holy crap when i am going at like 70MPH and up, there is a terrible noise coming from the tranny (i feel this vibration through my arm when holding the shifter!). Didn't happen before this mount.. I am gonna go back to stock, i'd say rubber mount is better... Although all my suspension components are poly and perform alot better! So, i guess it's just a matter of personal preference, but when im in Drive or Overdrive, and going 70 on the highway, it's not worth that crappy vibration...

Did you or did you not use the shim?

Re: ES Tranny Mount--The Shim Question

I believe the shims your reffering to are used to correct drive line angle. If this is what your talking about it can cause a viberation on acceleration. You may find the answer in a chevy service manuel

Re: ES Tranny Mount--The Shim Question

I thought I was clear: I'm trying to establish whether drive train vibration is experienced in the above two categories, one uses a shim, one doesn't. So if a shim isn't used in the first category when it's required, is vibration experienced (none for me)? If a shim is used in the second cat when none is required, is vibration experienced?

Poly mount users or others with experience with please chime in. Year of car and whether you used a shim or not would be helpful.

Re: ES Tranny Mount--The Shim Question

In my 86, I used a ES trans mount with the shim, and I had no vibration, that was with a spohn X member if that makes a difference or not...

Worse comes to worse, try it with or without the shim, it only takes 15 minutes to do.

Re: ES Tranny Mount--The Shim Question

i have a bird, not a camaro, so i dont know if the shims were used differently.

1986 trans am with the lg4/a4

Stock i had no shim.

I used the Energy mount with the shim and picked up some vibration.
After some time, I removed the shim and the vibration remained, but at a higher speed, and not as bad.

After removing the shim, the mount lived about 500 miles and then failed. Could be coincidence, maybe not. The shim is referred to as a "preload" shim by energy suspension when i purchased the mount. The mount had less that 4k miles on it.

Im currently using a Prothane mount, with a totally different drive-train. Engine, poly engine mounts, different trans, UMI crossmember, 9" rear. I have no vibrations worth mentioning, and no shim plate was included with the mount.

Re: ES Tranny Mount--The Shim Question

To be clear the shims are installed by the factory to align the pinion angel of the rear differential to the angle of the the rear transmission yoke not all cars use them. The vibration will occur on hard acceleration ad will disappear at higher drive line RPM. If your car came with shims they are required. If your not sure, purchase an angle gauge from Sears and realign the shaft. If your unsure the difference can be not grater than +/- 1 1/2 Degrees. The correct the situation add or subtract shims to get to the proper angle.
