Clutch doesnt dis-engage gear till all the way down, whats up!?

Could I have air in the clutch system? I checked the fluid level and its fine. I have an 89 camaro rs 5 speed. The clutch doesnt disengage till about 90% down, and when I try to go into first gear it shakes the car bad.
whats up?

Well, I'm not a transmission expert by no means, so no flames.

Your clutch could be going out. I only say COULD because my brand new clutch in my 87 S-10 Blazer did the same thing, but I was told it was because it was a Hydraulic Clutch. Maybe you do have air, i'm unsure. Go bleed it and find out.

It not exactly sure either but it might be your slave cylinder or your t/o bearing on your clutch fork isn't sliding back and forth proplerly, how many miles are on the clutch?

The only thing i think it could be is the throw out bearing is either worn or lost its lubrication, but then ahgain it could be something else

hey,

sounds like you need to go through the hydraulic system on your clutch. I'm not saying your clutch is good, but the symptoms you're experiencing are the opposite of what a worn out clutch would give you. If it's worn out, the clutch disengages at the TOP of the pedal stroke. eventually it'll slip all the time and strand you somewhere.

that said, I think you need to check out your master cylinder, and your slave cylinder. these parts are available at your local parts store if you find that one of them is bad. The hard part is finding out if it's bad or not. I don't really have any advice there. basically, it sounds like you're not getting enough throw on your clutch fork. this could be caused by air in the system. the air compresses a whole bunch and THEN the slave cylinder moves. This is a likely source of you're problem so I'd start there. Try bleeding it out VERY good. if this isn't it, I'd say you need some new components somewhere.

later
Clem

I talked to him on AIM, and he said it is disengaging at the TOP of the arc, right before you release your foot all the way from the pedal. I think he may have engage/disengaged mixed up.

bttt,
So everyone basically thinks I need to bleed my clutch before anything else, right? Is this very hard to do?
What about my car shuddering bad as I go into gears and take off? Is this just a by product of my clutch being so out of adjustment cause of air in its hydraulics?

Shuddering? i thought thats clutch slippage, right? When your foot isnt on the clutch does it make a clattering noise..? And when you press it the sound dissapears?

Bigchevy, you hit the nail on the head. No shuddering till I let the clutch out to go into gear.

thanks for the tip overclock! I actually figured it out just now reading another post that had it. hadn't figured out the first t until you said it, I was thinking maybe 'transfer' or something. thanks

well if it's 'shuddering' or chattering when you let out on the pedal (ie, when ENGAGING the clutch) it sounds like a hotspot on your flywheel (possibly on clutch or pressure plate?). that's bad because I hear they come back after resurfacing.
mine is that way (was when i got it too). best bet is to just abuse the tires and dump the clutch . no, not really!

is the car hard to shift into first from neutral when you're stopped??? if not, you don't have a real problem besides the hot spot maybe.

did you bleed the clutch yet?
