bad idea with driven gear sleeve?
I am not positive on this but I read on a chevelle forum that you can just drill out your 34-39 tooth speedometer gear housing (aka "sleeve") to fit a larger 40-45 tooth driven gear? Or should I just buy one from transmissioncenter.net for $67 + shipping?
Thanks

Re: bad idea with driven gear sleeve?
I took a look in my speedo parts and found the smaller tooth count gear to be longer.
that meant the large tooth count gear(with metal shaft) was too short. are you talking about the speedo housing or the actual transmission extension housing?

Like I told you in an earlier post, I've got both sleeves, and I honestly can't even see a difference between the two. My suggestion would be to just order the gear you need for now and see if it'll fit up ok on your existing sleeve. The chevelle guys might be referring to the older setups that used the all plastic gears that have the integrated plastic shaft. Ours have the metal shaft, and I'm pretty sure all the metal shafts are the same outside diameter. If anything, it might end up being too short like ed o said, but I doubt it. I put my one metal shaft in both the sleeves I've got, and it fit both of them the same.

Re: bad idea with driven gear sleeve?
I went to my local chevy dealership and they gave me a housing for electronic speedometer and t-5 transmissions with a green gear that had a metal shaft. (part # 25522491) But it had 42 teeth so I thought maybe my 40 would fit but its diameter is wider then the sleeve diameter. And the driven gear I got from PATC has a plastic shaft. So I am just gonna do what you said and see if my plastic gear fits in the sleeve when I get around to it....Hopefully this weekend.

That's weird that they sent you a gear with the plastic shaft. On their site they show pictures of driven gears that look exactly like ours. Might wanna ask them if they have the gears with the d-shaped hole in the center instead of those cheesy plastic shaft ones. I'm pretty sure you can still order the correct, metal shaft style gears from the Chevy dealerships too, so that's another option. Probably wouldn't have to pay any shipping costs getting it from a local dealer either. Thread Starter

Yeah they sent me a black plastic gear. It has a nipple end and not a cone end with a D-metal shaft. However the housing I got from the dealership came with a d shaped green gear. It is the gear under " 700R4 and Electronic T-5 Transmissions" It is a black housing like the one shown to the right of the gears on transmissioncenter.net. Should I just keep the housing from the dealership and order a 40 tooth driven gear with a metal shaft? I am not sure which is right, the driven gear with the cone end or the nipple end.

The cone-shaped gear is definitely the correct style. Just go to your local GM dealership and grab a cone-shaped, 40 tooth gear and you should be all set. Btw, I've got a 39 tooth gear sitting in a drawer out in the garage that's cone-shaped and fits the metal shaft. If you don't have any luck getting a 40 tooth from the dealership, I'd be glad to sell you the 39 tooth gear I have.
