stupid question but i gotta know

what do the 2500 stall TC actually do for performance? what type of TC should i get if mine is going bad?

It all depends. If you have a basically stock engine that makes power at @2000 RPM up to @5000, then you will be losing 500 RPM of usable power! If on the other hand you've added headers and a hot cam and now it doesn't make power until @2800 RPM you will have a little bit of a bog, get it? The point is that we hear about stall converters and we think that we should all have one (well we do actually!) but the real point is that we should have the correct stall for the engine setup we have. In the first instance, instead of a higher stall converter, lower gears would be more beneficial (but not too low, it peaks out at 5K remember). The correct stall is one that puts us at (or JUST below) the beginning of our power band.

I have major bog problems at full throttle with the 700-r4. my setup is an un-modified carbed 350. First gear revs up great (I think due to the deep ratio of the 700-r4 first gear). But the 1-2 shift gives a slight bog and it takes a while to get up to where it makes power again. 2-3 shift and 3-4 shifts are totally horrible, it sounds like the engine and feels like the engine doesnt have enough power to accelerate the car anymore and the rpms are real low. I have a 2.73 rear end (I know thats horrible), but could my TC be part of the problem? I will be modifying my engine a lot this summer so I wont be changing it now (only to have to change it again later). I would just like some insight into this problem... Thanks and sorry I couldnt help you buddman01rs, I guess I have a similar question.

Johns84bird: A higher stall converter will help the launch. It's not going to do much of anything for the 1-2 shift(or the other shifts), since you will be above the stall rpm both before and after the shift. Hold it in first gear a little bit longer. Your main problem is those gears.
My advice for anyone getting or wanting a higher stall converter is to get the optimum gears first, most likely 3.42's or 3.73's, and then see if you need a higher stall converter.
