where does your car shift

I have been playing with my TV cable, and I can't get it to shift right. It now shifts real hard, but when I floor it it doesn't kick down and will **** at 3500 rpm. Where is my car supposed to shift at on WOT??

you have got the cable set too tight the car should shift into drive at 38 to 40 mph."normal driving."you need to push your button and pull the head od the cable towards the front of the car a couple of teeth. when you push it back it tightens the cable leading to your problems.don't get on the car untill the cable is set right you will trash your tranny

It all depends on the calibratin of the tranny. My '88 Camaro shifts at 5500 RPM stock (it has a TransGo Shift Kit but that doesn't change WOT).To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the D button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting. Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all of the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal floored, press the D button and pull the cable back as hard as you can and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does. If after this you don't have what you want then you have work to do inside of the tranny.

My tranny shifts at 6,000 rpm.

Adjusting the TV cable isn't the correct way to alter your shift points. Basically the TV cable should be pulled to the max at WOT assuming the correct geometry and thats the only setting it should be in.

Changing your shift points should be done by altering the governor weights and/or springs.

What did you do to get those WOT shift points? It didn't come from the factory that way.

Hi JoelOl75,
Where does it shift at minimum throttle? Part throttle, just keeping up with traffic? Does it seem to hang onto a gear a little too long with this setup?

No, the part throttle shifts seem in the right places. I know adjusting the TV to change your shift points also changes part throttle firmness, but I haven't had any problems so far by modding the governor... it feels the same after, just the wot shifts are later.

It is possible that the cable is slipping. Did you use the factory method?

I believe that you will find the factory LG4 transmissions shift at about 4000 RPM, whereas the L69's all shifted at 5000 RPMs and the TPI motors shifted somewhere in-between.

Of course, we all noodle around with our cars, so they now shift at many different speeds. Mine's currently shifting at 5900.

My 89 IROC-Z 5.7L Shifts at 5200 RPM 1-2 Shift and 5600 RPM 2-3 Shift. If I leave the gear selector in 3rd the 1-2 shift is at 5600.
This is way too high an RPM for a stock TPI motor. When I last had it at the track I noticed that after 5100 RPM the engine does not want to climb anymore.(slowing down both E.T. and MPH) Between 4800 and 5000 RPM Shifts for stock Cam & Intake is the best shift point.
Needless to say I will be fixing the problem on mine very soon.

Whiteroc,
I feel the same way, how do you adjust the shift points to where you want them?

The trans shift points are determined by the setting of the throttle valve cable in small part but will damage the trans if far off of the factory settings. The other way which is what you are basically asking for is the governor weights. The heavier the weight the sooner the trans will shift and the opposite effect for lighter weights. You would have to go into the side of the trans where there is a round cover (half way up the side of the trans)remove the cover, change the weights, drive the car to see if it shifts at the RPM you are looking for. It's basically a trial and error thing -at least thats what the guys at the trans shops have been telling me. Be carefull though, some shops don't have a clue about the governor weights and will tell you that you need to have the trans rebuilt to fix your problem. Hope this helped you some.
