Shift kit differences?
What are the actual differences between a B&M Performance shift kit, and a Transgo Shift kit.
I don't care to know which is better as everyone seems to favor the Transgo. I want to know the actual differences!

Re: Shift kit differences?
Harder shifts and it holds the gears longer, which is good for passing. My 87 which is a 305tpi has one and i find it more fun to drive than my 89 with the 350tpi. When you put reverse or drive it looks like the car is staging, my second gear chirps once in a while, while driving normal i mean. And overall its just a better gain in performance. Kicks overdrive at around 35mph so i do pretty good on gas too.

Re: Shift kit differences?
Which one are you referring too B&M or Transgo?
Re: Shift kit differences?
The B&M "kit" consists of two metal sleeves to sshim the accumulators solid, a high pressure pump valve spring and a drill bit to enlarge a couple holes in the seperator plate. All in all, about $5 worth of hardware store stuff. - This set-up induces overly firm shifts at all throttle levels and will eventually beat the planetaries out of the transmission.
The Transgo kit includes a modified seperator plate, HD accumulator springs, a high pressure pump valve spring, the 'vette servo and associated springs/hardware, - that's all I can think off the top of my head(HD pump slide spring for maintaining proper pressure at higher rpm and a low/rev boost valve, iirc). This is not just $5 worth of junk and it allows you to select the proper shift firmness for your application. It incorporates a "firmness curve" (if you will) meaning the harder you're on the go pedal, the harder it will shift. Quick, crisp shifts are great for increasing clutch pack life, but you don't need it to rattle the dash at part throttle shifts.

Re: Shift kit differences?
for note: the spring is about the only usable piece in the B&M kit. I've probably got 20 of the sleeves in a cup on my trans bench, which I took out while rebuilding various "performance" trans' built by local shops. - The springs I keep/use as needed, the sleeves are just to explain to the next guy who comes in with his rear planetary trashed.

Re: Shift kit differences?
So even if your just cruising around town, not doing any hole shots, the B&M will still beat your trans to death?

TransGo doesnt have any file stating what comes with their kits. They DO however have a video of installing the kit. Maybe that will display the parts list?

Let me know if this helps, Ill keep looking.

Re: Shift kit differences?
oh ok, i'll check the transgo kit out when its time.
yeah i always kind of leaned towards that style hood because a lot of other people will just get a cowl and i wanted mine to be a little different.

At first it was kind of disturbing since not only was i not used to driving third gens but i was not used to this big scoop in the way, but you really get used to it, and when i take it out in the mornings sometimes and the sun glares in through the scoop i can see the Tuned Port Injection plate..I find it very comforting lol somehow.

Re: Shift kit differences?
Does anyone know how much the transgo kit cost?
X2
Sounds weird but the first time you drive with it on it's like the cowl is in your face but I'd say after at most a week it feels like part of your car and it doesn't look as big as when you first drove it with.
Also people notice that hood, I get a lot of compliments on mine all the time plus it's weight reduction and your engine can roar a little louder

Re: Shift kit differences?
Thanks for the info everyone!
Next question; I was told that there are a couple differnt types of the transgo kit. If so what is that about?

Re: Shift kit differences?
jr kit- includes spring and shim for band
spring for pump pressure regulator
springs and seat for 1-2 accumulator
updated throttle valve and return springs
some springs for valve body-to help match kit
2-3 reprogramming kit
option to make it a stick shift only
same green pressure regulator spring
updated t.v.(same as j.r.)
cup plugs for valve body, case, and separator plate
band adjustment shimms(not same as j.r.)
3-2 control valve(in valve body)
some v.b. springs
instructions to modify with drill bits to v.b.
(no servos are included in this kit either corvette or otherwise-----WTF!!!!!!)
(no boost valves are included in this kit either-----WTF!!!!!)
I prefer the J.R. kit because I don't like permanently changing a valvebody or transmission case. You can get firmer shifts with the j.r. kit by drilling separator plate to 2-3specs., installing bigger boost valves in the pump, and installing a better band servo.

Re: Shift kit differences?
^ hmm, I was thinking the vette servo was included with one of the kits, but maybe it was just added by the company I order parts from. IDK. The servo is only like $15. - I usually use the Superior "shift correction" package and the billet servos along with various accum spring combinations depending on the application.
Yep. Overly firm shifts, even at low/partial throttle levels = constant pounding on the planetaries.

But doesn't the regular SK700 do more then the J.R.? Also how much did you pay for your J.R.?
